Hi all,
The wife and I are heading to New Hampshire for a fact finding trip on the 14th of Sept. Mainly to see the towns around Berlin, Gorham, etc. (Coos County). This will be our first time to New England, what are some points of interest that you can suggest? Sites, activities, suggestions on places to eat? Thanks for your help. |

Take a ride on the Kankamangus secnic highway and get up to the white mountains if you can. That ride could be on your way to or from.... on the way home just stay on 16 south until you hit the Kanc and take it over to Franconia Notch. Go north from Berlin on Rt 16 and drive along the river and look for moose. When you get to Erroll go west till you get to the notch.... cant think of the name right now. Its pretty nice..... not as good as the Kanc, but not bad either. You could stay on 16 and head over to Rangely Maine.... some nice lakes along the way. If you want to check out a good sporting goods store check out LL Cotes in Erroll.... not a bad place to wander for a bit. Sorry, cant help you with stuff in Berlin or Gorham better..... there are lots of stores and factory outlets in North Conway but its been a long time since I was there. I will be up in that area the 12th and 13th..... |
| Its grabbed pics from google to show the road/mountain. I did the road as a passenger in a F250, Very bad idea. The truck was too wide to pass other cars coming back down and we had half the tire over the edge a few times. I was too busy praying for my life to worry about pictures. That is why I suggested the COG railway not knowing the size of Newfman's vehicle. Going up to the top is the next best thing to taking a plane ride around the area. Just be sure to check the summit forecast first, it can be 80's at the base and 40's at the summit. |

It is a good view. I have hiked it 6-8 times in the winter and a few times in the summer. Yeah, a 250 might be a tad big for that ride.... at least you dont have to worry about someone else running you off the road! I have heard the cog railway is now diesel or something like that so no more smoke.
More on topic... to expand on the Kanc..... there are lots of nice pullouts for day hikes or playing around the Swift river on the east side.... cant remember the same of the river on the west side. Parking and hiking at Franconia where the Old Man of the Mountain used to be is also pretty nice. Otherwise running the back roads north of Berlin is always fun.... just watch the gas guage and keep an eye out for log trucks. I spend a lot of time north of Errol hunting and fishing... its a great area. |

In addition to the Kancamangus, Route 302 through the White Mountains is really pretty.
also, http://www.byways.org/explore/byways/2256/stories/49045 my photobucket account is down due to exceeded bandwidth for the month, I've got tons of pictures through that area.
It's not very far over to Vermont from where you're going either. If you end up in the Stowe area, Smugglers Notch is really nice, I was there a little earlier this week. eta, watch for moose in the road!

Not trying to be a spelling nazi but it's spelled Kancamagus, or just "the Kanc". I just don't want Newfman to do a search and not find it due to spelling. The Kanc is one of the most beautiful rides anywhere. Good chance of seeing moose or bears there too. Some other great places to visit in the area would be The Flume, The Lost River, Bretton Woods, Mount Washington, North Conway.
One of the great things about NH mis that it offers so many different types of geography in such a small area. There's the seacoast region which is pretty much just like southern Maine, the lakes region for all kinds of 4-season recreation, the north woods, the White Mountains, etc. We've got great fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and, believe it or not, world class dining in some areas, especially Portsmouth. Visit NH |
| Rt. 26 through Dixville Notch may be worth your time. Couple of nice waterfalls, lots of "moose wallows," and just plain scenic. I spend a couple weeks every year up in Northeastern VT in the logging country driving/biking/skiing the great network of paper company roads. |
| Keep going through Dixville Notch on 26 till you get to Colebrook. You can climb Mt. Manadnock (Same name as the one down south) It's a great 2hr climb with awsome views. There is an old gold mine half way up on the south face, fire tower on top. When your done there get on Rt.145 and head north to Pittsburg. Stop at Beaver Brook Falls on the way, can't miss it. When you get to Pittsburg head to the Buck Rub Pub (my buddys place) and eat some lunch. From there you can explore all the Conn Lakes and rivers. There is plenty of moose and wildlife to see. Have fun!!!!! |

I havnt been to the Buck Rub Pub in ages..... I was there one year in deer season and there was s woman in there that.... ummm.... well, never mind!
The Conneticuit Lakes in Pittsburg are pretty nice to! So many places to see.... If you had time you could try and find Garfield Falls.... but thats a bit of a ride. |
| I grew up there, born and raised. Been stuck in Florida for 16 yrs waiting on a pension. Afew more and I'm heading back up. I got some land on Perry stream. You hear of it? It runs into Lake Francis. I miss being able to shoot in the back yard or gravel pit. South Florida sucks!!! |

| The only problem we incountered was not seeing any Moose.... With all the traffic signs around, I started to think that these things are a mythical creature to bring in the tourists, like unicorns, and big foot. I guess the best time to see some were at 9PM using spot lights. Next time I will be prepared... |

Just don't illuminate 'em with a spotlight during moose hunting season, it's illegal. |

I've got tons of pictures through that area.
