I have been asked by a friend to write a letter of recommendation/character reference for their pistol permit app. here in CT.
Unfortunately I'm not the best writer. Could someone post some ideas on what I should write? Thanks! |

Mine basically wrote that they know me and consider me a responsible individual. Some fluff in there like how they know me and such, but basically that's it. In my case I don't think they even read the letters, just checked names and phone numbers and called those people to verify they existed and wrote the letters of their own free will. I had to laugh about that, since one writer shoots at least as often as I do, another I got into guns about a year ago and the last was my immediate superior at work at the time and a rather large fellow. No one short of an NFL player is going to intimidate him into something short of maybe blackmail or holding his dog hostage. He'd be more inclined to take his chances on both anyway, and turn you into paste. Nice guy if you're nice though. |

I've seen some that were really short like "I understand X is going for a pistol permit. I have no problem with X having a pistol permit", but one of the nicer variations I've seen is:
To Whom It May Concern: X has asked that I provide this letter of character reference for him. I understand that this letter will be part of his application for a pistol permit. I have known X, who is (insert relationship), for over (number of) years. In that time, (insert various activities you may partake in together, more about the relationship) I have always known X to be a level headed individual and I would have no problem with X carrying a firearm in my presence. He has demonstrated the ability to make good decisions and I wouldn't give a second thought to X’s ability to judge right from wrong. If you have any additional questions, or if there is anything specific that you require of me, please do not hesitate to contact me at (phone number) Sincerely, That's the ad lib version of one of my letters. |

This was discussed not too long ago. i've got 2 templates I've put together:
I am writing this letter to recommend that John Doe of 123 Main St, Anywhere, CT be approved for him Connecticut pistol permit. I have known John for XX years & find him to be of sound judgment and exceptionally good character. I am writing this letter on behalf of John Doe of 123 Main St, Anywhere, CT.
I believe that the applicant is of good moral character and that the applicant understands the seriousness of the responsibility and the trust that will be conferred upon her by the community to safely own and handle a firearm, and that she is suitable to be approved for a state permit to carry pistols and revolvers. Please note that I am not related to, employed by, indebted or obligated to the applicant in any way. |
| Dosen't have to be long. I wrote that I had been to a shooting range with x and they were a good person and would be responsible with a firearms. Got a call about 2 months later from one of the sgt's in the police department asking me if I wrote a letter for this person. I said yes I did. He said ok thank you and hung up. |
