I just picked up my Class A LTC from the local PD. They also gave me an envelope with a piece of paper with a "PIN" number on it. The letter said I need this PIN number for future gun purchases and suggested I memorize the PIN number or bring the letter with me for all gun purchases. Is this something new in MA?

Does the LTC have your picture on it?  If so, I can't see why you'd need a PIN.  If it doesn't, then I would definitely want one.  Same as for an ATM card with no picture where anyone could use it without a PIN.

Yes, it has my picture and finger print on it. This must be something new.

I see.  I can absolutely see no reason for a PIN.  Just another shitty hurdle to make things "that" much harder.

The pin is for the "instant on line" part of the transaction

If they can use it you don't have to fill out the old paper form

BUT I had the wrong PIN, another townie that got his LTC at the same time got mixed up with mine

Nice.........

Had to get with the CLIO to get straightened out

This is part of the MIRCS system and has been in use for ~4 years now.

MIRCS setup includes dealers scanning your fingerprint and the form (FA-10) becoming auto-populated with your info.

I've watched people struggle to get the reader to recognize their fingerprint.

So, if the fingerprint reader doesn't work, the PIN is a "backup" which allows the transaction to proceed.

You are free to throw away the PIN if you want, just understand that if the reader fails on you and you have no PIN, the transaction can't proceed.

Ok now I understand it.
