Ok, I know 7.62x39 'AK TYPE's are not allowed in CT, but what about getting a saiga in 7.62x39 or even .308 and do an ak conversion on it? I know others hve done them without any problems in other states, but think that would work in CT?

.308=OK (NGX had a .308 Saiga last time I was over there)
7.62x39= bad,no-go, it will jump up and wantonly kill children. Based on what I've read, I believe that the Saiga 7.62x39 is AK type. The magazine and feed ramp seem to be the main difference between the Saiga and a traditional AK. However, the litmus test is, IIRC, the bolt carrier. I don't know about the bolt carrier- check on the AK section. If it is compatible, I'm right- and it's a no-go.

As far as the conversion goes, as long as you comply with the CT Assault Weapons Ban, and 922r, you should be good to go.

I was thinking that too, but I could swear I've seen a Saiga 7.62x39 at Hoffman's a while back and was thinking of picking it up. I guess it could have been a .308.

Would be interesting to have an ak conversion on a .308 saiga though, I must say. They even make hi cap mags for them now. Could shoot the cheaper 7.62x51 surplus too and pack a huge whallop.

IIRC the .308 Saigas have metric 7.62mm markings on them (as well as some cyrillic script).

Could that be what you saw?

While 7.62 x 51 is a great round and would be fun to try in an AK type rifle, I don't thinks it's "cheaper" anymore......certainly more expensive than 7.62 x 39 for sure!  Samco has cases of about 1200 rounds of brass cased Yugo 7.62 x 39 for about $260 right now!  I could only dream of finding 7.62 x 51 ammo for that price!!!

Good point..

Glad I've stocked up on some 7.62x39 last year at 1/2 the price it is today. Don't even have a rifle to shoot it out of yet.

I was also looking at 7.62x54r, these still go for cheap for surplus ammo.
Too bad only old stuff shoots it.

Get yourself a Romak3/SSG97. Chambered in fairly inexpensive 7.62x54r, cool looking, fun to shoot and CT legal. They also come chambered  in .308, but at the price of .308/7.62x51 now, I can't imagine to many of us are out blasting away 100's of rounds anymore, like the good old days of cheap mil-surp ammo.

I just got rid of my AR sniper upper, so don't really have the want for a Romak 3 type of rifle.

Guess I'll stick to 5.45x39. Only thing is ,when the surplus ammo dries up, we're SOL. I have not found any reloading components for that caliber.

You can reload 5.45x39 by making brass out of .222 brass and .224 bullets resized to .221 according to a THR thread. There's also a place that sells very expensive brass. .

Even when the milsurp ammo runs out, Wolf loads 5.45 as well. There should be enough commercial market in America for a while to justify their continued production.

If there is ever an import ban, I bet some American maker will pick up the slack- there's a lot of rifles floaing around that will need feeding- a good business oppertunity.

Good point. There are lots 5.45x39 rifles out there I'm sure, so someone will probably pick up the slack.
I'll probably order more ammo though. I reload .223 and .45acp, but I don't want to get into resizing and reforming casings, etc.. That starts getting too involved for me.
