Question.....

When you buy a new gun from a dealer, that information is kept on file with the dealer right? How long does it stay on file, forever?  I assume it's accessible by state and federal law enforcement.  I was thinking of a situation I read about recently where police contacted a guy about a gun he had sold years ago.  The gun had been found at a crime scene but was not involved in the crime.  The people in the household where the crime was committed couldn't legally have firearms so the police contacted the only guy with a paper trail to the gun and asked him if he wanted to come get it, otherwise it would be destroyed.  He did go get it but I was curious how this police department found the original purchaser.  Obviously, if it's not in a federal database it would have been impossible.  What am I missing?

If I remember correctly the dealer is supposed to keep the paperwork for 60 days, after 60 days it is supposed to be destroyed.  Not can be destroyed after 60 days, its supposed to be mandatory, along the same lines the Feds are required to destroy all paperwork after 60 days, I remember ATF got in trouble because it wasn't doing that, if they keep all the data that equates to registration.  By law the Feds aren't allowed to keep purchase information, they might be able to keep class 3 paperwork, I don't know about that.

The dealer retains the 4473 for 20 years and the law enforcement officials likely initiated a trace which begins at the manufacturer, to distributor, to dealer, to the 4473 kept the dealer's records not a federal database.

I bought an AK about 5 years ago from a local dealer. Sold it on Armslist a year ago and wrote out a bill of sale to a nicely dressed gentleman driving a Mercedes. About 6 months later I receive a certified letter from none other that the F B I informing me that it was seized during a raid, and to contact them if the property was mine. I called and told them that I had sold it and have a bill of sale, but if the gentleman can't legally own it I would be happy to come get it! Nope. They said it would be 'destroyed'.
