Do you mean the buffer retainer spring? The buffer retainer and spring will come out when you unscrew the lower receiver extension (aka buffer tube)
The takedown detent spring comes out when you take off the backplate. The buffer retainer spring is fairly fat, like a ball point pen spring. The takedown detent spring is very thin and sort of long... 
Both of them have incredible skills at camouflaging themselves after being launched across the room
