Me and a couple buddies are really looking for a place to go hog hunting. Preferably somewhere that does not charge or on public land. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Give up now...the hog infestation is a myth.  There are plenty of places with nice high fences that will happily let you hunt their hogs for a pricey fee though.

The problem with the hog infestation my friend is that first of all it is very real, and secondly most of the land owners are doing their damnedest to help it grow so they can profit from it. This is not the good old days where you can ask a farmer to go hunting and they will say yes. Here is how it works. Show up with your check book and a pen and be prepared to use both of them. You will end up being allowed to hunt hogs.

That is the reality.

Glad to help.

My dad has found several places to hog hunt without paying for it. But it seems they don't last long. He'll kill some hogs, load them up and throw them in a gully, etc a few times then there is no more hunting. As it gets closer to deer season, farmers don't want anyone hog hunting and cutting into their hunting lease income.
What seems to tick the ranchers off is when they call him and  ask if he wants to come back out and start hog hunting again, he tells them he has something else to do.
A buddy of his trapped a few small hogs by Arcadia the first of this week and already has them on a salt/ice bath prepping them for cutting up.
The land owner wants the hogs gone but will not allow firearms.
That is the kind of BS you get into with feral hogs and landowners...

You might have better luck looking for BIGFOOT!

I live in Western Caddo county out in the country.  Nothing around me but woods, creeks and fields.  There are pigs, lots of pigs but they dont move around like deer or something.  One week they will be in the timber east of my house and then they are gone.  Then a month will go by and they are on the creek to the West of me.  There is no rhyme or reason to the way they move around.
After 6 years of living back here I have learned they head to the Wichita Mts in the summer and when fall comes they are back here around me.
You have to know someone in order to hunt them.  There is not one farmer/rancher around here who is trying to get the population to grow.  They do too much damage to make it worth anything.
We shoot most and let them lay but a lot of people also keep the sows to eat.  This is another reason people are a little stingy, its taking food from them.
Deer have a ceratin place they stick to, they bed down in one area and have set areas they go to eat, hence they are easy to shoot.
Pigs stay on the move alot.  They can cover a great distance each day.  All they do is eat and move, eat and move.  A few of us that live remotely out here have an agreement, when we see the pigs somewhere we call each other and go bust a few.

Bigfoot????? Did somebody say Bigfoot??????

FWIW, where the hogs are thick in certain areas, they get eaten by Bigfoot. They run them down and pound them against a tree or ground to kill them.

That is where my old man seems to find places to hunt fairly easily. He's got a fairly good place around Gracemont and some more around Ft. Cobb and Binger. He just doesn't seem to get that much enjoyment out of busting them anymore.
One of his Apache buddies is calling him several times a year to come hunt. He likes to go when he can fish too. The funniest story he's told about hunting hogs is sitting there waiting for a couple of hours with no luck, then they decided to go fishing. They hit the road and the hogs crossed in front of them. He won't say exactly how many they got but I think from the way he grins when telling the story, they got quite a few.
He came home with a load of bass but no hog meat. That's my old man.

Out of curiosity, whats a good caliber to hog hunt with? Ive got .45, 5.56, 7.62x54R and '06
11/10/2012 10:12:13 AM EDT
[#19]
5.56 works just fine on hogs assuming you are using decent bullets. I have never had them run away from me, A Barnes TSX will plant them with no problems so will a Nosler Partition. 6.8 works awesome as does 7x57, 308 and many others.

The point is to kill them. If you don't care if they run off and die, any bullet in a 5.56 will do the job. If you are hunting for meat, a premium round is probably better.

Looks like 223 on the left and 308 on the right.

The middle I would assume is a 308 case necked down to fit a .17 cal bullet.

Thats gotta be the most retarded looking round ive ever seen. Looks like the bullet would be ripped apart out of the muzzle if it made it down the barrel in one piece

I'm pretty sure the round was for entertainment purposes only.  Sure would have some velocity if it could stay together.
