In Caddo county we just had the election process for our county Sheriff.
This was my first time to get involved in local elections so I was not familiar with the process. The sheriff who is in office now was running for re-election and one other guy ran against him. The sheriff and the other guy are both Democrats and were on a democratic ballot. I was not able to vote because I am a republican and no republican was running
I thought they were messing with me but it was the truth. Why does your political affiliation have any bearing on a law enforcement position? Is this the case in every state? It would seem like this is a good example of why we need separation of politics, religion, etc. |
| Are you sure that this was not just a primary election? Since there were two democrats, they have to run against each other to run in the general sheriff election, right? This would explain why you were told what you were. The only election a cross-party vote is disallowed in OK is primaries, IIRC. |

He was elected sheriff. Your democrat sheriff was elected for you and you never got to vote. It sucks I know. I am a republican also. |

It just seems like the system is flawed. Imagine that, a flawed voting system.
The part I dont get is why a party affiliation is attached to a law enforcement position? Does the sheriff's office only respond to issues affecting democrats since he is a registered democrat? No, of course not. So I guess since the only two running are Dem's, no matter who wins, I still have no say in the matter
And for the record, I like Gene, he has always done right by me. |

This has nothing to do with whether or not Gene is a nice guy I think Gene is a good guy, I liked him when he was a was a State Trooper. My point is you had no opportunity to vote for anyone. Just as I did not. Thats not equal representation. |

Same exact thing happened to me about 25 years ago.
I thought that they were kidding also. Two democrats running in then demo primary. Winner take all since there was no republican running. I argued with the lady at the polling place and said the same thing you did. She said I should either register as a democrat or find a republican to run. I've been a registered democrat ever since. Horrors. On a positive note, I had some good laughs when the demo party calls me and asked me for donations for Clinton, and later Obama. Dave |

He and my dad have worked together for years. |

I think the party system will eventually be taken out of the city and county offices, but they haven't done it yet. This was a primary, as a registered Republican you could have voted for a Republican candidate for Sheriff if there was more than one running, the Dems get the choice in their primary this time, you will be able to vote in the election when it comes along. In Oklahoma the Sheriff is still a politician and this state is kind of behind in that the Deputies in most counties work for the Sheriff personally, so if a new Sheriff is elected they will lose their job, and if they are EXTREMELY lucky they might get hired by the incoming Sheriff, there is no guarantee. I was a Deputy Sheriff in Oklahoma for several years, when my Sheriff lost an election by a very few votes, the entire staff lost their jobs, 3 got rehired, they lasted about 6 months. There is NO state protection for county employees, this is stupid, hopefully one of these days that will get fixed. http://wingman26.com/images/family/sheriff10a.jpg Wingman, I also hope the system is changed soon. Thats too bad about your job, hopefully you went on and did better things. |

Here we are getting a new State Rep and new State Senator, when they take office I need to contact them and see if they can get together with some other lawmakers and fix that broken system of county government. We had one Deputy that was just 6 months short of retirement, so he lost all those years of paying into the state retirement system. |

Only allowing registered democrats or republicans to vote in democratic or republican primaries prevents the other party from exerting influence over the primary election.
If I, as a republican, could vote in democratic primaries, I would vote for the candidate least likely to win an election against a republican challenger. Democrats could do the same thing and poison the primary elections for republican candidates. The solution is to always have a republican running. or you can change your affiliation... Oklahoma State Election Board I do agree LE should be hired rather than elected. |
