Are already running around Killed 2012's first Pygmy Rattler today... Brother was clearing some paths in the pasture with a bobcat when this moving stick caught my eye. Then he caught a .380ACP |
| Mmmm...makes me wanna fry one up. My cat used to catch snakes and bring them home all the time. Not venomous snakes just grass snakes and such. One day she brought three home within like four hours, although, it could have been the same snake because I kept taking the snakes away and letting them go lol. |

They have one in Okeene too., May 4-6. That's a bit closer than Mangum.
Quoted:
Edmond won't acknowledge their community is full of snakes.
They don't have a Code Enforcement Officer, they have a Community Image Officer.... |

I'd be watching out for timber rattlers and copperheads in your area if you mean the ones that slither on the ground. Makes sense. Kinda surprised I haven't seen one laying out on the rocks of well pad. Depending on how close to the water you are, a water well house can be a hole up for water moccasins. I once pulled a bunch out of a well house in Novermber. The sweet/sour stench of a bunch of water moccasins can be pretty sickening. Copperheads are the ones most likely to get you in eastern OK. |

I killed a tiny little thing that looked like a copperhead but was about the size of a ringneck (baby copperhead?) a few weeks ago. It's the only one I've seen this year that wasn't already dead.
Most of the snakes around here I see are rat snakes, grass snakes and king snakes, and I leave those alone, especially the king snakes. That may be why I don't see very many copperheads or cotton mouths around. |

Saw a pair of what I assumed to be cottonmouths on sunday. Triangular head, ~4 feet long, dark dark brown. Sunning about 6 feet from cache creek in the Wichita Wildlife refuge. Any tips on how to ID snakes? They creep me out... |
| Just now gettin yer 1st snakes? Heck Waynoka had their RattleSnake Hunt weekend 2 weeks ago. Theres alot of places doin Rattlesnake hunts. I wasnt there to hunt, just to ride 4 wheelers n party at the sand dunes. Besides, theyre more trappers then hunters. You get a permit n then i think they give you a snake grabber hook thing....im thinkin my 18.5" 12 guage would work better for huntin than a stick....oh well. |

They are aggressive though and many times are mistaken for moccasions. |

Crossing over a creek yesterday, looked down, and saw two moccassins wrastling around. Were they making babies or fighting over food? This city slicker is slowly learning here, so bear with me. Usually two snakes intertwined like the Staff of Asclepius (medical symbol) are breeding. Did you get close enough to determine which one was male or female? If there was a sweet/sour stench you were close to cottonmouths for sure!!!!! |
