Pet Peeve: Weather idiots

As I sit here watching TV they are preempting the regular TV shows for severe weather, now I don't normally have any problem with that except under certain circumstances, like when the severe weather is well outside your viewing area!

They are talking about areas in the state that are a good 150 miles out of OKC, the areas in question have stations that are much closer to them, and those people will be watching the channels that are local rather than OKC.

The gross over reaction seems to go on every spring when weather starts to act up, its pretty darn irritating and serves no useful purpose.

I'm sorry if I offended any idiots, most of them seem to be smarter than TV weathermen/weathergals.

Their over reaction and saturating the area literally with the sky is falling, year after year, storm season after storm season, is the reason so many people died in May of 1999.
They got tired of hearing the same old BS, night after night, and just ignored the weather forecasters by turning their TVs to cable stations.
The storm came in the dark while people were watching HBO....

Ive never had a problem with it. But I normally dont watch loval tv and if storms are about, I check my computer weather map until the storm is about a couny or so away.

I've been in an F4 tornado that I never thought I was going to make it out of alive. The weather forecasters were going on and on about the storm but it was quite a ways away and I wasn't that concerned (I was used to the constant excitement of the forecasters and used to not seeing much, if anything,  come about from it) so i went to bed. Soon after I fell asleep someone woke me up and said it was coming. The destruction was unbelievable and the only reason the fatality count was zero in our area was because those same forecasters scared the shit out of everyone and they took shelter.  Not long after that another tornado hit a nearby area killing several. As I was helping pull one of the dead out I remembered being really glad those forecasters got so worked up the night it hit us.

Yeah, it's annoying when they cut into your favorite show, especially when the 'action ' is so far away from you at the time. Do they go overboard sometimes?  Yeah they do but I'll take that any day over the alternative.

I actually agree with this, Id rather them be worked up to what amounts to nothing much then have them shrug off another May 3rd

What you talking about "shrug off"?  We watched the May 3rd one all the way from Chickasha and were in behind it picking up patients 15 minutes after it passed.  Gary"we're all gonna die" England was on that one continually.  Thats not a bad thing when they are close and big, but like Wingman said, those were 150 miles away and not even close to  our viewing area and they don't need our constant attention.

People shrugged off May 3rd BECAUSE of their constant screaming about bad weather trying to out do another station.
People didn't believe them when they had yelled the sky is falling so many times.
Have you watched Gary England? That poor slob is repeating himself verbatim every other minute and two thirds of the time has to look at the TV to see where he's at.
It's all trying to get ratings. They more they think they can scare people (even without real cause) they think they will raise their ratings.

Gary England - We have rumors or suspect a tornado has formed and touched ground in Sante Fe, NM and will be here in approximately 17 hours.
Be prepared to take shelter in your closets, bath tubs....
That kind of stuff gets old. Alarmist weathermen screaming the sky is falling is over the top.
If the constant screaming of severe weather and tornadoes was justified, we'd all be living in concrete bunkers 20 feet underground instead of houses.

I grew up watching Gary England, Ive even met him several times when I was in High school and once or twice in Elementary during his "terrible twisters" program. Personally I like the way he reports weather way better then 4 and 5. Course then again I'm prejudice to chan 9 because my uncle used to work for them back in the 80s. People call him "mr panic" or were all gonna die or what have you. I myself don't get tired of of it. Hell Id rather know what an approaching storm has a history of vs not knowing and getting anal raped by it. But thats just me, looks like other opinions do vary.

Dan, it may be for rating, but I don't see how a news channel can get good ratings by the logic of everyone getting tired of the reports and tuning them out. Cant get ratings if no one watches you. It may be, but I don't see it. Then again, Im not quite 30yo yet

It doesn't hurt anything to do an update during the commercials, put a little weather map in a corner of the screen, or a roll of text across the bottom of the screen, I have absolutely no problems with that.  But when you preempt regular programming for over an hour talking doom and gloom, and more than likely not one person in the area effected saw even one second of it.  The extremely severe weather they were warning against fell apart before it even entered their viewing area.

The areas that the severe weather was happening in don't get the OKC TV stations, whether they are on antenna, cable or satellite, their local TV programming comes from TV stations much closer to where they live, and that is where they will look for weather information when threatened.

I spent a number of years involved with tornado spotting and severe weather watching, you needed to be extremely careful not to be crying wolf when it wasn't justified, people will quit listening to you and your effectiveness will evaporate.

They cause greater fear where fear is present, then profit from it.
I'm afraid of twisters, been through more than I can count. I've seen them roll across fields, I've heard them come in the night. I've been lucky that major damage or loss of life hasn't happened.
But then I don't get as afraid as some people do.
The DAMN NEWS MEDIA create a great deal of fear for those who already fear the night twister. Some people are so afraid they won't turn the station off which raises the TV station's ratings and brings in more revenue by advertisements.
SCREW THEM for their blazing sensationalism. They cried wolf so many times people ignored them and it cost them their life.
I turn off the damn TV and listen to the NOAA weather radio if I think things are going to get bad.
If I listened to the damn TV I'd be dragging family into a bunker.
This is Oklahoma. Twisters are a fact of life.
It's not the fucking end of the world like the news media makes it every time there is a threat of tornadoes.
They over do it. It's stupid and it cost lives because people ignore it after a while, then the real thing happens.

If I'm not mistaking, the loss of live factor here has dropped since the May 3rd tornados. Last outbreak had what, a few deaths? Theres been outbreaks where no one died, luckily. I see the validity in your argument. I don't subscribe to the chicken little ideology but like I said, Id rather see them having a stroke over a sprinkle (exaggerated of course) then to take a shit storm like May 3rd or what was it, February of 08 or 09 and shrug them off and people die. I have 3 or 4 different weather sources and I look at all of them regardless of the weather just to see who agrees and who doesn't. Ive got two weather maps that actually rarely agree with each other
