We are leaving for Colorado and have changed our route. Question is what is a quick synopsis of carrying a pistol/rifle through your fine state? TIA

Someone will be along to correct me, but as long as your guns are cased/covered and stored separate from ammo you should be golden. If you got a CCL/CHL/CWP/ect... you should be fine to pack your heat here.

Without a CCL you may keep firearms in the interior of the vehicle in a case out in the open when they are neither chamber or magazine loaded.  Long guns may be kept behind the seat of a vehicle without a case as long as they are neither chamber or magazine loaded.  Long guns may be kept in a trunk or exterior locked compartment while magazine loaded, but they may not be chamber loaded.  There are a few other stipulations but those are the main ones to worry about if you do not have a CCL.  For further reference check the tacked thread at the top of the forum titled 'Oklahoma Self Defense Act' and click the links to find the SDA.  Look for the section(s) about transporting firearms in a vehicle.

Is it sad that I did that from memory?

We're still free here. Throw your damn guns in the back and drive through Don't drive like a lunatic and chances are, you wont run into an OK LEO and have to worry about it.

Actually, Seansworth has it right

Without a CCW license of some type, just make sure your guns are unloaded and cased.  A loaded gun in the trunk or in the car if you don't will get you in trouble if you don't have a CCW license..
If you have a rifle (or handgun) with nothing in the chamber and a loaded magazine near it, both in the open, it's considered a loaded firearm. Even if both are just laying in the trunk of your gun or in the glove compartment.
So case your guns unloaded and keep your ammo separate if you don't have a CCW from your state.

Also, Oklahoma is a must-notify state.  Meaning, if you have a CWL and plan on carrying concealed here in OK, you are required to notify law enforcement if you get pulled over for a routine traffic stop (or if you are being detained/arrested ).

Have a safe trip.

Edit - forgot the word "stop" after traffic.

And if the above does happen, law enforcement has no right to inspect a properly concealed weapon unless they have probable cause that a crime has been committed.

Another fine example of how restricted our "freedom" actually is

But if they initiate contact with you, let them know IMMEDIATELY!
If you bump into one at a restaurant and just shoot the breeze, don't worry about it.
But in a traffic stop, let them know ASAP.
