Prehistoric Cemetery Reveals Man and Fox Were Pals

Before dog was man's best friend, we might have kept foxes as pets, even bringing them with us into our graves, scientists now say.
This discovery, made in a prehistoric cemetery in the Middle East, could shed light on the nature and timing of newly developing relationships between people and beasts before animals were first domesticated. It also hints that key aspects of ancient practices surrounding death might have originated earlier than before thought.
The ancient graveyard known as 'Uyun al-Hammam, or "spring of the pigeon," was discovered in the small river valley of Wadi Ziqlab in northern Jordan in 2000 and named after a nearby freshwater spring. The burial ground is about 16,500 years old, meaning it dates back to just before the emergence of the Natufian culture, in which pioneers used wild cereals (such as wheat, barley and oats) in a practice that would eventually evolve into true farming. These communities dwelled 11,600 to 14,500 years ago in the Levant, the area that today includes Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

Speaking about "scientific theories", National Geographic recently had a show on TV about Bigfoot.
The premise of the show is that there has to be something to the existence of Bigfoot due to the hundreds of sightings by credible witnesses every year.
It shook the confidence of a relative of mine who was a confirmed non-believer.
Now he admits there must be something to it....
But then again, he thinks Al Gore's documentary about global warming deserved an Oscar.

Well we are talking about something that happened 16,500 years ago.  There has to be a little speculation in there somewhere.  Still I tend to believe that something very similar has to have happened.  I tend to think wolf or fox pups were domesticated first, and later kept as companion animals and protectors. JMHO.

ever see the pbs nova show on dogs and their association with humans?

it was mostly about how humans throughout the world have changed dogs by selective breeding etc.

had a section where some russian scientest did a ongoing study on a "fox" fur breeder farm where they did selective breeding, they selected the most tame animals and bred them together, after several generations of animals the fox's appearence began to change, they started getting more white disperced throughout their coat with some animals totaly changing color and they started "barking" like a domesticated dog does instead of yapping like a fox, they also became dog like in wanting to be around their handlers.

on the flip side, the scientest bred the most aggressive together for many generations and as a result got a super aggressive fox that would attack soon as they neared the cage, the fuckers would chew on the cage trying to get at the scientest.

I read the article yesterday and thought how interesting it was that a scientist would make a conjecture based on a few animals found in a burial site.  Who is to say that this was a limited experience akin to someone having a pet "coon"?
