I heard a story last night from an acquaintance. He got pulled over for a traffic stop, then arrested for some unpaid parking tickets. The police "couldn't secure/lock" his Honda (?????) and took his handgun in the car when he told them about it. (He has a legal SDA permit).
They didn't tow his car off because he pulled into a convenience store and parked it when they turned the lights on him.
His handgun is now in the PD's possession and he has to pay his attorney to file a court motion to release the handgun.
Cost will be about $1000 to get back a $300 handgun.
He said his attorney said this is standard procedure with Oklahoma DA Prater's office.
I don't know if all the particulars about this story are true, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was.

I knew it took a bit to get back, but I didn't know one had to pay to get their gun back.

I'm going to guess his unpaid parking tickets are about 1,000 dollars.

I'll also guess that the police weren't going to leave the firearm in the vehicle because if the vehicle is broken into while your friend was in custody, it might result in them being liable.

If I were a thief, I would definitely break into a vehicle who's owner I saw get arrested.  Little chance of him coming back that night.

Remember, these are guesses I'm making.

No, the parking tickets are a separate matter.
He said the police wouldn't let him lock his own car and said they couldn't get it to lock.
It is about $1000 for the lawyer and filing fees to get his gun back from Oklahoma City.

As long as people tolerate shit like this it will continue to happen . Get rid of David Prater, John Wetzel and Chief City for that matter.

When we went to the Friends of the NRA banquet a few weeks ago, Oklahoma County Sheriff Whetsel won a pair of custom 1911s worth around $3200.
The only way we'll get rid of Whetsel is if he dies or the Gaylords want him gone.

We tow every vehicle unless there is a licensed (and sober) passenger to release it to.  Also we will secure firearms, even when a vehicle is towed, and store them in the property room.   Doesn't cost anything to pick it up later, and they always receive a receipt.

That's not in Oklahoma County or the Oklahoma City PD by any chance?

Everytime I hear this name you speak of, I keep thinking your are referring to Praetor Shinzon:

No. Northeast corner of the state,
