I was pulled over for speeding on I-40 a few days back.  The motorcycle officer stood behind my vehicle and wrote a ticket.  When he approached my window to give me the ticket (first contact), I had my DL, insurance verification, and SDA permit in my hand and clearly visible.  Before he was even with my window he exclaims " Sir do you have a weapon!".  He proceeded to chew my ass and talk about jail and confiscating my handgun.  I kept my trap shut because I did not want him to do either. We never had any kind of contact for me to verbalize the fact that I was carrying.  I want to obey the law. I was afraid to ask him, did not want to look like a smart ass. What is the proper protocol?

Sounds like you did the right thing and he was just having a bad day and wanted to feel empowered. Or maybe you looked like a punk!

I would have asked for his badge # number and name and contacted a higher authority if the verbal abuse was "excessive". Or just let it drop and don't worry about some prick overreacting.

Read in the strictest manner the SDA regs state that you should have verbally told the officer that you were armed.  We were told in our class that you MUST say..."officer my name is _____, I have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, and I have a concealed weapon on my person".  The officer should then be aware that you have the weapon and instruct you on what to do. That does not however, excuse his going off the deep end about it.  I have been pulled over and said the very thing and been released with a warning for the moving violation and nothing being mentioned about the weapon.  Just my .02.

Speaking up is indeed what the law requires, but I've heard LEOs complain about people "bragging" they have SDA licenses.  They aren't exactly bragging, SDA holders are required by law to do so.

I guess I'd rather be accused of bragging than the alternative, which could get you in real trouble.

What did this dude want you to do, jump out of the car with your pistol in one hand and your permit in the other?  I'm not sure I understand why you were threatened with jail.

1) He was pissed that you failed to offer him a donut.
2) You had no dog present for him to shoot.
3) You failed to show the correct amount of respect to his majesty.
4) He's wound a little bit tight and really needs a talking to from someone up his food chain.

Take your pick. I'm going with #4 myself.

Disclaimer-this post is not meant to bash the police. If I wanted to do that, I'd beat up on my wife who happens to be the fuzz. Which won't happen, as I've gotten tired of the tasings.

that's funny since I spoke/joked around with a female cop that came into the casino this morning, she told me she was gonna beat the hell out of me and make me like it, I told her that I've let chicks beat me before and I did indeed like it, but they didn't go around bragging about it afterward...............she didn't catch it at first, but when she did she said she was gonna taze me instead

He was being a dick. I've been pulled over a few times while armed and the officers were always calm and polite. Two of the times I had my documents ready just like you did and when they came to the window I informed them that I was licensed and armed. The 3rd time that OHP Trooper was like a ninja or something. I was on my bike and saw him turn around and hit the lights so I went ahead and pulled over. I shut off the bike and before I could even pull off one glove he was standing right next to me. He was cool though. Oddly enough they all seem to like seeing someone carrying a 1911 cocked and locked.

Sounds like this guy is just naturally a dick.

I have had my CCL since they became available. Since then I have been pulled over 4-5 times and had one accident.
Several times I believe that the CCL actually helped get me out of a ticket. I have found that most OK LE are cool about things..

Was this guy a City Cop or HP..?

Andy..

Those tiny cameras that leo's have now on their shirt pockets, I have one in my cup holder. I get pulled over or see a wreck or anything, I turn that thing on. It's about the size of my pinky and gets good video and excellent audio.

And again I say you did the right thing. When I get pulled over (only once side I've received my ccl) I hand them the licenses and insurance and say DL, insurance, and my Concealed Carry Permit. The OHP didn't have a problem and simply said "very good".  I don't mind OHP or bigger city leo's but the small town hondos are the ones that power trip on me the most. Trying to catch me ridin' dirty. Ain't gonna happen!

When you are pulled over simply put your hands behind your head. They will motion you to come out of your car many times while they are standing behind their door or take up a position on your right rear bumper.
I always do that as a courtesy to them to let them know I am carrying.
Some get hyped up if they are standing at your window and you tell them you are carrying. Some don't.
Go with the lowest common denominator and put your hands behind your head. Or up against the windshield.

It's that little medallion he has attached to his license plate, not any secret handshake/signal.

We pulled a guy over last night for running a stop sign around midnight last night.  He pulled over just as soon as he saw us turn around on him. He had his license, SDA permit, and insurance in hand when we made it up to the window, SDA on top of the pile. He told us that he was armed and the gun was under his seat. We asked if he knew why he was being stopped and he said that he blew the stop sign. All he got was a verbal warning and a thanks for pulling over quickly off the road and telling us about the gun. Whole thing took less than a minute.

So, he did not approach the vehicle first, so the first contact was when you offered up your CCW, license and ins.  That is following the law right there.  No way would I get out of a vehicle on the highway or busy street in fear of getting hit, much less shot by the officer.

Well, I know it's hard to believe R, but one time....this guy was talking about mounting a Code-3 MX-7000 on his backhoe. I think he ended up going the sensible route with a couple of TIR3's or something instead.

Last time I was pulled over, cop had me get out, do the perp stance while he removed my gun from my pocket.  He then left the loaded gun on my front seat while my 7 year old son was in the back seat.  He made me wait at the back of my truckwrote the ticket.

I now understand. The MX-7000 was tempting since I had several at the time but I decided on the sensible route instead.
