Are there any good public hunting lands (preferably not too far east of the city and pretty much anywhere in western half of the state) that are good for a couple of beginners to scare some turkeys at this spring?

Canton Wildlife Management Area. But you WILL have to scout the area out for a few weeks if you plan on being successful. Plus putting up with some a lot of others hunting the area.
I've had more luck turkey hunting on Canton (son also) that any other public hunting area in the state.

A few years ago I was turkey hunting on Ft Sill. Didn't get a bird, but got a lost medic who was out land navigating. He walked right up and didn't see me until I spoke to him. He was kinda small, so I decided not to "harvest" him. Gave him some help and sent him on his way.

Only thing I forgot to mention about turkey hunting at Canton is you may pass out from lack of blood. I can take a bath in DEET and it still seems like I get a cloud of mosquitoes hanging around so thick you can't see more than two feet.

My main hunting days are going to be Tuesdays and Thursdays so people shouldn't be too big of a problem.  Hopefully not too many of ya'll will skip work.
