Tonight I saw a doe fly by my stand. There were two bucks in a dead sprint behind her!
One big one and a smaller 8pt. They ran by my stand three times before the night was over.
Never could get them to stop. The last time I yelled at them and they just kept on running.

I also saw 13 doe and three smaller bucks on the food plots tonight. So I think rut is in the very early stages with a few doe in heat, with the main rut a few days away.

Won't be long now.

It definitely is. When you have a buck sneaking around and brushing up, he's not the one you want to shoot if your're trophy hunting.! There is a bigger one someplace close.
I found a scrape yesterday and circled it till I kicked a buck up. He ran downwind to circle back into the wind to catch my scent. But I moved on him. Not fast enough for a short range muzzle loader, but a sure thing for a rifle.
You know if a buck is the "big" buck in the area cuz he'll hit his scrape, then move onto the next one. Find two scrapes near each other, find a good ambush spot between them, and you'll have some horns to brag about. Or circle a scrape to catch a subordinate buck hiding, trying to sneak in on a doe or two.
Yeah, the rut is on. And during gun season, the dominant bucks will he herding his does but the rut will be winding down. We're one week ahead for a the full benefit of horny wandering bucks with black powder and a little late with gun season.
Tomorrow will be one GOOD day to hunt with the temp dropping into the 30s!
Posi, I'm throwing stuff like this in to help you learn deer hunting. Or the way I leaned it anyway. Hope it helps!
