... and a message on my instrument cluster relating "Stability System Disabled."
Is this sufficient cause for a rejection? My quick scan of Part III of the requirements seems to indicate that I might be able to pass without fixing this on my Tahoe (to the tune of ca. $1500). After all, the behaviour is now as it would be if not equipped with the traction-control option. Thanks for the read! (PS. If you've got some expertise, a cite -- whichever way the question is answered -- would be most appreciated! |

Or you could just disconnect the battery (which will clear the code), and then drive it, and let it sit overnight.
If the code does not come back when you start in the morning, get ye to the inspection before it comes back. If it comes back, you could get a scanner and find out what is the exact code. Then google the code to find out what part is associated with that code. Replace that part yourself. |

Thanks for all of the input. I'm a little leery of 'inspector shopping' ... although what with the some of the junkers that frequent the streets of my little corner of liberal-nirvana (here smack dab between Guatemala and Honduras), I suspect that one or more places interpret the requirements freely. Freely that is, except for the price; something tells me that a premium is levied.

... you could get a scanner and find out what is the exact code. Then ... replace that part yourself. Been there, done that. The code is 'the dreaded' (for owners of Tahoes of my vintage) C0327. It's beyond my abilities to do the sensible repair (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kldd1fu_csY, intentionally left cold, and not embedded), Wasting the money replacing the whole unit (vice only the defective part) as recommended by dealers just grates ... Check the State Police web page - as I recall it has the inspection items Right you are. It is a good overview of the 10 or 12 individual web-pages that make up Part III of the requirements. (My link above is to the first page. Part IV is for motorcycles.) Here's a link to the VaSP site for other readers: VA State Police Safety Inspection Summary |

Just to complete the story, the new (to me) inspector at my regular inspection station was happy to answer my questions before beginning the 'look see.' Bottom line, he was taught that if it's not called out in the program guidance, then it's not a reason for rejection ... traction control, stability system, etc, are not called out. (My other question concerned the nozzles of my wiper fluid jets -- attached to the Tahoe's windshield washer arms -- which were frozen ... also not an inspection item. The time in the bay for the inspection was enough to thaw them out.) He smiled when he said, 'Once I'm in the car, and that decal is gone, it's a whole 'nuther matter.'
The inspector volunteered that he'd heard some "horror stories" about rejections based on other inspectors' feelings, instead of the program guidance. Thanks to y'all, I was forewarned and forearmed, as I brought a printout of the VaSP Summary along for the ride. I tried, but it's currently off-line. I'll check it out later. glad it worked out for you.
My experience has been that the inspectors I have dealt with are not looking to screw anyone and are happy to answer questions. The guy I was going to, my new car has lifetime free oil changes and state inspections, was really good about that. I was going to him for so long that if he found something minor that was wrong, both of the rear tag lights were blown on my g/f suv once, he would pass the vehicle if I promised to take care of it right away. I would always hit the auto parts store on the way home and take care of it that day. |

I still have to deal with this, too. My out-of-state tags are 3 months expired :(
If anyone has recommendations for an inspection station near Charlottesville, I'd appreciate a PM. I really don't want to have to put $2k into my Jeep to fix shit that isn't critical to begin with. |

The mechanics are less inclined to fail you over stupid shit. |

They are always very fair . I had a tailight bulb out once and the manager called me and said they put a sticker on it and for me to just put a bulb in it instead of charging me to do it. I don't know if it will help but if you want go by there andtell Todd that Neil at Masters Auto Body referred you. |

If you have a friendly mechanic/shop that is helpful when it comes to inspections, please don't post their name for all to see. The State Police frown on things like that, and they may just decide to pull their license. While I didn't specifically ask for that, I did say I'd like a PM :) |

I just don't want to see someone get jammed up. |

Thanks! The page is definitely worth the visit ... I've now got an electronic version of the whole kit-and-kaboodle. The page's ability to 'report' on sections of the code, which is then E-mailed to one as text/html, merits adding to the beginning of the Virginia Firearms Code Sticky. In addition to the rescinded one-gun-per-month info, the admin code also contains such gems as:
