Somehow I missed this story:
http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/02/04/baby.dna.government/ It mentions groups in some states that have protested the practice. Anyone know if groups exist in VA that are opposed? |

Interesting... and I'm surprised this is the first time I've seen it, since the article is from 04FEB10.
I don't recall seeing anything regarding Gubmint collection/retaining of DNA. I know we did all the screening, and we contracted with a private company to retain cord-blood for 25yrs. But I recall nothing regarding submitting DNA sampling to any government agency. Unfortunately, my example wouldn't be helpful to VA folks here, as my wifes OB/GYN was in MD and daughter born at Sibley in DC. Nothing done in VA. |

BTW, OP, your query ties in interestingly with these two current threads: One has to wonder WTF is really going on in our supposedly open, free, liberty-minded country.

Quoted: What liberty-minded country do you speak of? Certainly not the United States of America. I haven't seen it as being very liberty-minded for most (if not all) of my life. But then again, I've spent my years living in "less free than most" states. I wish I hadn't seen the parking-lot swab stories you posted. Damn, it's depressing how this country continues to decline. Yes..Virginia does perform these tests. Was told its state law and could not opt out. No idea if they keep it forever, was told they did not once the tests were completed. Now I wonder. I actually looked through the Va Code on this last night (title 32.1, the Health title) and it talks about federal HHS guidelines for the genetic screenings, which makes me think it's a federal requirement. There is nothing in the Code itself that says whether they keep DNA with personal identifiers on file, but there is all sorts of stuff about the state keeping records about test results, the Commissioner shall carry this out pursuant to regulations he may promulgate, etc. ... so I'd say it's at least "possible." |
