Late yesterday afternoon, I got a call from the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center asking if I could pick up an injured hawk near Hillsboro. I drove over there, and found a guy waiting at the side of the road, with the injured hawk standing in a wooded patch near the road. The two of us managed to catch her, and get her into a cat carrier I brought with me. The guy said that the bird flew up out of the ditch when he drove by, and he hit her with his pickup. She had a broken left wing, but the vet at the wildlife center said that the break didn't look too bad, and it looks as if they'll be able to fix her up with no problem.
It was a Red-Shouldered Hawk, with what looked like a 2 1/2 foot wingspan, and claws that were fierce. I used an old towel to help get ahold of her, and you would not believe how hard it was to get her grip loose from that towel.
Seeing a bird up close like that puts a lot of truth in what the muslims say: God is great.

Hawks are amazing animals. There are quite a few out at my grandparents farm and I will sit on the back deck and watch them do what they do. I could do that all day.

I have an iPhone video I shot from my front yard last Spring - wish I could make it load...

A hawk is making lazy circles maybe 100 or so feet above my yard, and is suddenly set upon by about half a dozen blackbirds..
He/she takes out two of them over the next couple of minutes, and they flutter, broken to the ground.  By this time, they have all gotten probably a hundred yards up,
and the hawk was diving on them and kickin' ass !

the shreiking of the hawk in attack is very clearly heard on the video, as is the fearful cries of the scattering blackbirds.

said blackbirds apparently saw the folly of their predicament, and four survivors departed
post haste..

Hawks rock !!

Hey Conductor, I'm just outside of B-Ville, are you a Clarke guy?  Some friends have been very involved with the Blue Ridge group through the years, it is a good organization.

I think hawks are beautiful and agree that God makes an awesome product.  Of course we run poultry at the farm so they frustrate the heck out of me periodically...

Nice job on the rescue.

Not a Clarke guy. I'm in Loudoun, about 3 miles south of Lovettsville. Agree that BRWC is a top-notch group of people.

Thanks for the attaboy.

...except when the son of a bitch is eating my chickens. As for what the muslims say... I'll be nice and shut up.

This thread reminded me of my story from last May. During my lunch break I was walking my dog on the path behind my home and she was darting into grass to sniff whatever was in there. I noticed she was sniffing a dead baby bird that must of fell out of its nest She sniffs something else and its a live baby bird that must of fell out of the same nest! I had no idea what to do as it was so tiny, see photo below, but I gently carried it home and put it in a small bowl. I fervently contacted different local bird rescues and to cut to the chase my half hour lunch break turned into two hours but the little bird was successfully dropped off at bird rescue
