Getting one for my car to make my commute more interesting and just to have for emergencies. What should I know and what frequencies do peeps in NOVA hang at?

Don't keep asking for a radio check. Don't talk like they did in Smokey and the Bandit. 19 is the truckers channel and the most entertaining, just sit back and listen, and don't have any young kids listen to 19

Smokey, bear, full grown, ya got 1 at....location, or in the middle, mile marker. Ya got 1 with a capture at...

Look at export radios, I like RCI. more power, more frequencies, technically illegal.

ETA:  Put on your big girl panties before wandering in, it's worse than GD on a Saturday night.

Well, you could spend about 2 hours studying and get your tech ham license.

Then spend about $200 or less and get yourself a decent mobile package and enjoy clean conversation with above average intelligence people and leave the bull crap on channel 19 behind.

Or get a CB.

Get both, a CB for low brow entertainment and to hear some asshat in Las Vegas blasting radio checks, and a 2m rig for grown up discussion.
CBs are good to find out what's causing traffic jams though

I used to have a CB in my Tractor but haven't put it in my new one. Totally useless for information, just guys trying to start a fight. I agree with some of the above don't have any children or your wife in the car.
Now days if you want to know about what is causing traffic instead of asking on the CB and rarely getting an answer. I just pull up the closest traffic camera on my cell phone.

+1

I trust the local RACES and general hams way before I do some random trucker on a CB for emergency purposes.
