I am in NOVA and just got all of the parts that I need to convert my Saiga. I have field stripped a bunch of AKs, but never messed with the trigger group assembly.
I have watched a bunch of Youtube conversions, but still have some questions. Anyone in NoVa know their way around one of these? LMK and thanks, G |

Convert into what? That shotgun can ONLY be imported into the USA with a "sporter" type stock and NO pistol grip; it looks more or less like any other shotgun - as sold in that configuration. It is only imported with a 5 round magazine. Here is a link to an image: http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSSSLospd1X2TNKNgJO01HmTFbwfG6fQHoC2T_xd3xAtwsj9zIRyw When properly converted, the Saiga 12 looks just like a large AK-47. The ONLY lawful way to accomplish that is to add a sufficient number of parts made in the USA to create an "majority-American made" shotgun. Guns made in the USA can have any legal configuration; imported guns cannot without the right parts added. No reason to think OP is considering anything but following the rules. To the contrary, asking on a public forum suggests he is trying to do it right. OP will probably add: trigger, disconector & hammer, plus pistol grip & buttstock. |

This is relevant to my interests. Been lurking on saiga12 for years and have always back burnered doing this. What's a good basic parts list besides user specific pistol grip or stock that will be needed. There's no one parts list as there are multiple ways to convert this (i.e. make it compliant with 922r ). It used to be a trigger group was required as other parts weren't as available. Now you have domestic fore ends to choose from, pistons, and even mags (not my favorite option) There's lots of info on Saiga12, they have a section devoted to conversion and 922 compliance. They have a lot more current info. Here's what I recommend .... make a list of parts your finished shotgun will have (same as sporter imported version, just add the pistol grip) and mark those that will end up foreign made. There's a letter the ATF wrote many years ago that floats around that lists the parts a sporter S12 starts with. The "gift" in that letter is the ATF doesn't consider Saiga shotgun to have a mounting block/trunion (but saiga rifles do, so rifle conversions need to count it). If you google, there are a lot of help "calculators" that will ensure you are at or below 10 foreign parts in your converted firearm. The least obvious to me is the muzzle attachment .... and my S12 doesn't have a threaded bbl so I don't worry about it. Some feel the thread protector is a muzzle attachment, my feeling is that if you haven't attached a flash suppressor you are ok .... but there are so many domestic parts that you can get well below the compliance threshold. In fact, only 4 parts are not easily switched to domestic: barrel, receiver, bolt and bolt carrier. So, my suggestion is to go thru the parts and decide what you want to end with. You can decide based on preference or cost or ??? I"m no lawyer, but final word of advice: I'd be a little careful using mags for compliance because you have to make sure you don't have any foreign mags in your possession. Constructive intent could be implied. |
