What is the common way to DQ?  I'm not too familiar w/ 3gun aside from the matches I've watched online.  I'm thinking of going to this.  Ok for beginners?

I would suggest an observation on the first match if you are new to it.

We have DQ'ed for breaking the 180 and loaded pistols falling out of holsters with no retention.

Good advice.  But Moyock is a long drive & if you have not shot 3gun before, you have to start sometime.  Bring your gear just in case.  If my old friend Terry is still running the show down there, it will be a high quality production.

Here are a few things to keep from getting DQ'd:

1) WALK each stage.  Yes - you will see other shooters running between cover/shooting positions.  Resist the temptation to run & just concentrate on safety & getting good hits. Your first shoot is not about taking home 1st place. Keep the competitive spirit in check & you will be better off that day.

2) There are about a dozen or more sets of rules for 3gun. The use of the sling tells me this is not a USPSA match, but the OP mentions the "180" - which is a common USPSA rule so you can look at the USPSA  rules for a general idea (www.uspsa.com).   By "180" he means: a 180 degree line extending to the left & right from where the shooter is standing.  The 180 in 3gun is different from the "firing line" at your typical range in that: it moves downrange WITH the shooter.  It is a deceptively simple safety rule: if your muzzle crosses the 180 degree line, your match ends & you become a spectator until next weekend.

Why deceptive? Because, in practice, many guys break the 180 without noticing.  For example: imagine you unload your handgun at the end of a stage & accidentally drop the unfired round on the ground.  You bend over to pick it up and  - uh oh - your muzzle just crossed the line (and maybe you also pointed your handgun's muzzle right at the feet of the range officer standing behind you - which is why this rule REALLY matters no matter where you are shooting).  Again, if you are not trying to go too fast, these safety rules are much easier to follow.  For a look at some more sample safety rules, google: IMGA, Mystery Mountain, or Ft. Benning 3gun rules. The 3gun forum at www.brianenos.com is also useful.

3) While I like 1911s & always will - I do NOT recommend them for this type of 3gun (I usually shoot a Glock or a M&P for 3gun).  Why? Because, this type of 3gun usually requires you to re-holster the gun while "on the timer" & it is easier to forget to fully re-engage the safety on a 1911.  Besides, there is usually no scoring benefit to 45 over 9mm in 3 gun.  Further, there is usually no magazine capacity limit in this type of 3gun and you might be facing a LOT of targets; 17 round mags come in handy here,

4) Holsters: you will probably have to re-holster in a hurry.  Kydex/plastic is useful here.  Also, if you end up running from one position to another or going prone with your sidearm holstered, make sure beforehand that your holster RETAINS your handgun (see OPs note on dropped guns). Shoulder rigs are forbidden for safety reasons (see 180).  Also, any holster that takes 2 hands to re-holster is probably a bad idea (ie if you need to hold it open with your weak hand, pick another holster).

Feel free to ask Q.s

I was a victim of the dropped pistol. It fell out while I was prone. I didn't even realize it until I was done shooting and the RO stopped me from getting up. I had an adjustable nylon drop leg (gun show special). If the gun was in it properly, it held well. But what I found out at the match was, if you aren't paying attention, the trigger guard could get hung up and the gun wouldn't be properly seated. I've got a 5.11 Bladetech I'll probably be using this coming weekend since my Raven hasn't shown up yet.

So here's a question. Running a Sig p226, should I decock before reholstering? I would figure it's the smart thing to do, but is it required?

-because this 3gun follows one of the many "outlaw" sets of rules, I cannot say whether it is required.

However, I can relate one experience w/ the 226/228/M11 that might strongly suggest de-cocking:

-many of you know Bruce Jackson, who taught a CCW class at Shooters long ago and who is a fixture at VCDL events & often mans their gunshow booth.

Bruce was instructing a student at Shooters one night in 2006 or 2007 when he noticed a guy waving a Sig around in front of his girlfriend & drawing from an IWB or SOB holster without de-cocking.

Bruce did not appreciate being "swept" by the muzzle of this guy's gun & politely asked him if he could might consider watching the muzzle?  Guy turned out to be a vet who had seen action in Afganistan & was a active LEO at the time & he basically told Bruce: "who the hell are you? & I don't need advice from you."  Bruce said "OK fine have a nice night."

Within 5 minutes, the guy fired a 40 cal round through his thigh; the bullet exited the front of his leg right next to his testicles.  Another combat vet on the line that night administered first aid and a medivac helicopter landed in the plaza parkinglot to take the guy to a trauma center (I understand he made a recovery).  Bruce can fill anyone in on the details if you see him & ask about it.

Can I say exactly WHAT caused the guy to shoot himself through the thigh? No.  But, if the Sig is not de-cocked, the trigger is easily pulled by a retention strap, errant finger, loose shirt/jacket in the trigger guard & caught on the belt, etc.  De-cocking makes such a possibility far more remote IMHO. I like & have used the Sig, But I suggest it be de-cocked before any re-holstering.

Anyway, as far as the DQ goes, you are in good company: there is a saying:

"there are 2 types of shooters: those who have DQ'd & those who will."  It just happens sometimes.  A friend DQ'd the same way with an M&P at the Iron Man after running a long way & finding his gun missing.  He did not have enough tension on the holster to withstand a quick run.  Live & learn.

Actually Terry B. only has an administrative role in these 3 gun matches. The match is ran by myself and one other. We have both been around the 3 gun scene for a few years. PM me and I will let you know who is who.

The rules can be found at http://blackwatershooters.com/multi-gun.htm hit the "rules" link.

Next one will be a month from now. Probably March 21st if I had to guess. You missed a good time. I had a blast yesterday although my shotgun gave me fits and I really needed a better long range sight than my eotech. I wish I had used my rifle instead of my carbine.

Got the email last night. March 14th is the next one. Sign up between Mar 2 and 9.

I would like to go to the next one. I have never competed, anyone willing to show me the ropes?

Thanks!

The guys there are all more than helpful. Just do some research on the basic stuff to have. This past weekend was my first full match. You get the idea pretty quick watching the other guys.

Short list off the top of my head.

-Good pistol holster

-mag pouches for pistol and rifle mags

-shotgun shell holder, (one round was nuts and we needed 24 shells) I used a side carrier, used one of the buttstock elastic        shell holders on my arm and borrowed a shell stripper. Practice reloading your shotgun.

- rifle sling that will hold the rifle well while your running. Should probably be able to hold the rifle in front of you.

- bring more ammo than the round count in the announcement. I used almost double the amount of carbine ammo trying to hit some far out steel targets.

- Knee pads are a good idea for some stages.

You could stay at Blackwaters lodge. I think someone told me it was only $60. Personally if I was driving that far I'd bring what I had and shoot. Even if you don't have all the gear to be competitive, your still going to have a good time.

I'm driving down Saturday night and staying in Chesapeake, since there are more things to down there than in Moyock.  It's pretty sparse out there.

Delta0313, the last match was $25 cash only
.
Neal or Matt, is there any possibility that the match will be canceled?  I just checked the weather and it looks like straight rain starting on Thursday - Saturday. I've shot in the rain before but I'm concerned about match setup the day before.

Here are some vids of the match in case anyone was interested.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRnO-VQzlbI

(notice the importance of reloading the shotgun as fast as possible.  Also, the carbine's recoil really seems to slow things down.  A brake would really help here- and some issue guns now use them).

Here is another:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDlXzpcdW50

(notice pistol malf.  I think Chris still shoots an M&P.  All guns jam eventually.  All of them.)

If Delta0313 goes down i think i'm taggin along with him. i wont shoot the match until i've had some pore trigger time on my AR (i've only shot it once).

slightly OT, NC accepts VA CHP's yeah? what about OCing? also, are there any good places to shoot OTHER THAN this match that are close to where the match is held?
this US training center... what are their rules concerning firearms?

Magnetic rifle ammo (Wolf, Barnaul bi-metal jacketed) okay for this match?

ETA: Nevermind, Rule 4.1 in the rule book states "4.1 No tracer, incendiary, armor piercing, steel jacketed, or steel core ammunition is allowed."

We are going to have a little discussion about that in the morning. It seems that some personally owned steel has 2 perfect holes right through the middle of it.
