Ok this is driving me nuts we are prety much definately moving to NOVA from the UK on a green card.
So I Email the BATF about getting my guns to the US and they ignore the Email so I Email them again and they ignore that as well!! so is this normal for the BATF? Nick |

spoke to the BATF yesterday about my guns first guy was very unpleasant he put me on to a very nice lady who in turn put me in touch with a very nice guy who gave me the number for another department . so far this doesn't look like it is going to be too difficult to get my stuff over. (I was worried a little after the first guy though.

sure can but I have some collectable stuff, and if possible I don't want to have to buy new lowers. well not just yet! Nick You are partially correct, you can buy some firearms. However, in Virginia you can't purchase assault weapons unless you are a US citizen. I know this is the case having been frustrated after not being able to make a purchase because I didn't have proof of citizenship with me at the gun store. |

The Virginia Code (Title 18.2, Section 308.2:2) reads as follows: "...no dealer shall sell, rent, trade, or transfer from his inventory any assault firearm to any person who is not a citizen of the United States OR WHO IS NOT A PERSON LAWFULLY ADMITTED FOR PERMANENT RESIDENCE." (emphasis mine) So if Badger has a green card, that means he is admitted for permanent residence, and he is entitled under Virginia law to lawfully purchase an "assault firearm". |

that's the way it was explained to me which is why the company has changed our imigration status to a green card (they want my wife so they are very keen for me to be happy with the move)
anyway we should get the contract on Friday so if it meets our criteria we will be over within 90 days. Nick PS. I still have to be resident in the commonwealth for 90 days before I can start gun shopping. |

Any time. There are some places to get British food, ie salad cream, HP sauce, etc etc so fear not! Does Shoppers still have "Sauce"? I'm with Badger, you can have the salad cream, but I want my double cream and my HP and my Birds powder when I'm too lazy to boil custard. |

Wegman's in Fairfax and Sterling have entire aisles devoted to British foods. |

the wheels are moving slowly but not quite as slowly as the ATF.
four weeks for a email reply and then that completely contradicts the telephone conversation I have had with them. So I will be coming to NOVA to live with or without my guns I suppose no one said it was going to be easy! Nick |

Nick Good luck , you can always shoot our stuff (if you buy the ammo) , we'll leave the light on for you. |
| Send me a PM, Badger, when you get settled in. I've got a pistol range in my back yard, and my next door neighbor has a 200 yard range in his back yard. Come on out (with the wife if you like) and we'll do some blastin'. I've got a veriety of stuff, including a submachinegun, and plenty of ammo. You supply the Guiness. |

as always thanks for the kind offers! ok so how much land do I have to get to build a range next to my house? do I have to get permission? Now you've done it this is going to cost me. anyone got a back hoe I can borrow? Nick In Western Loudoun County there is no minimum acreage requirement to build a range. The problem most folks encounter is that there is a minimum of ten acres required to build a house. If you can find an existing house on, say, 3 to 5 acres, (and there are hundreds of them for sale) that would be the way to go. The only requirement is that you do not discharge a firearm within 100 yards of a public road or an occupied dwelling house (not your own house, of course). No permission from any government agency is required. |

Badger, they let you have ARs or any other guns in the UK?
As to British food, I love the following joke: In a perfect world: * The police would all be British; * The mechanics would all be German; * The cooks would all be Italian; * The lovers would all be French; and * The Swiss would organize everything. In the worst possible Hell on earth: * The police are German; * The mechanics are French; * The cooks are British; * The lovers are Swiss; and * The Italians organize everything. |

Yes but no cartridge pistols or centre fire semi auto rifles, our AR's have to be straight pull (bolt action) or .22 rimfire for semi auto.
I can bring my .22 upper over but the two lowers I have are verboten so I can't save any money it's a shame realy one fo them is a Sabre. So it'll have to be all new AR's when I get over(well after the three month requirement). I'll have to see if anyone will extend veterans discount to a Brit. Nick |

AH! just the right guy what is the deal with the volunteer rescue squads? We will hopefully be moving to the manassas area but anywhere commutable for Arlington with land would be OK. Nick I'm not on a rescue squad, but I do have friends that are. Volunteer rescue squads very by location, but pretty much you show up and say you want to volunteer, they work out the training for you. Kinda depends upon the squad as to who pays for training, I think most pay for the training. Here in Centreville the Volunteers work along side the paid fireman and paramedics. But they have their own trucks and equipment. Kind of makes a weird situation some times. Every now and then the paid fire fighters truck will be down for maintenance, the volunteers truck will be sitting at the station with no volunteers on duty and the paid guys sit around not taking any calls because they can't respond using the Vols truck. Other times you'll call for an ambulance and 2 will show up, one professional and one volunteer. Other areas the volunteers cover 24/7 365, there is no paid fire professionals. IIRC in Manassas the Volunteers run the stations on nights and weekends, paid fire fighters run them during the day. (that information is about 4 or 5 years old so it may have changed) Here's a link to the Centreville Volunteer Fire Department. http://www.cvfd.org/index.html I'm sure the others have web sites as well. When you pick an area to live just do a google search for them. One thing that may hinder you, I'm pretty sure all VFD's require a background check and references, since you will just be moving into the area from overseas that may hinder the process. Edited to add: I just drove over to VA Arms this evening, the Greater Manassas Volunteer Rescue Squad had signs out saying they needed volunteers and provide training. http://www.gmvrs.org/ |
