Has anyone here traveled via BWI airport with a handgun?
I'm in WV and am taking a trip to AZ next month and will be flying out of BWI. I'd like to take one of my handguns with me as I'll be doing some shooting with friends out there. I realize that MD gun laws are a bit arcane (compared to WV/VA anyway) and would prefer not to be arrested on the spot when I declare my pistol at the airport (or if god forbid I'm pulled over on the way to the airport for something) - It'll obviously be locked in a case, which will be locked inside of my luggage;) |

To add to that- as long you follow their guidelines and the airline guidelines, you'll be fine. |

From what I can find on the subject.
Q. Can I legally transport firearms interstate?
A. Yes, under Title 18, Section 926A, of the United States Code, a person who is not prohibited from possessing, transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment. In the case the vehicle does not have a compartment separate from the driver's compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked compartment other than the glove compartment or console. and this How can I legally transport firearms within / through Maryland?
They must be unloaded, in a carrying case, holster with a flap and the ammunition should be separate. It would be best to keep the unloaded weapon in the trunk where you do not have access to it. There are further regulations but essentially you can only transport a handgun between residence, to and from a repair shop, a shooting sporting event, between a residence and place of business if substantially owned and operated by the person. For more information please contact our Licensing Division. How do you become a gunsmith, retail or wholesale firearms dealer, or get information on ammunition sales and/or gunsmithing? Please contact our Licensing Division for that information. Is it legal for me to carry a concealed weapon in Maryland? Only with a permit that you must apply for through the Licensing Division. You can download a copy of the Licensing Application by clicking here. Both of these are taken from the MD state police website under FAQ's and downloads or here Jeremy |

This probably won't be an issue if you are planning on flying with it, but something to keep in mind. I usually run a lock through the chamber and keep the ammo up front and the gun with unloaded mags in the trunk. It may be above and beyond what is required, but you never know the attitude of an officer in some of the less firearm friendly jurisdictions. You may make out ok legally, but your trip may be ruined. |

I lived in MD for 20 years before moving to VA and always heard that it was very rare for an ordinary resident to be issued a concealed handgun permit. The acceptable reasons being handling large sums of cash, jewelry, etc. I work with a guy who lives in Hagerstown and he said it was still that way. Almost like if you didn't know someone at MSP it wouldn't happen. |
