My wife asked for a Nikon Coolpix S52 digital.  Currently on sale at Ritz Camera for about $150.  My future daughter-in-law studies photography and I'm sure my wife consulted her on the choice.

Very good resolution, small and easy to carry.  Not up in the professional category, but will take pictures at least as well as a disposable.  Add in a spare memory card and carry case and you're still around your $200 target.

I also have the Nikon Coolpix (mine's a S51), and it's a very good little camera. Excellent resolution, good pocket size, and pretty much plug & play with both my Mac and PC. The battery life is a little short, but is good for single events.

Careful buying from Circuit City...they may be hanging in there just long enough to get through Christmas and then may shut their doors.  I'd buy from WalMart - cuz they ain't closing anytime soon

And an extra battery comes in handy.

Also, the resolution of most mid-end cameras is way greater than your monitor.
