Anybody taken a rifle into The Armory for work? How was it? The prices on their website seem very reasonable.

I am glad you asked that question.  I just broke the extractor on my Springfield 1911 yesterday and was looking for someone to do some work.  I wonder if they work on XD's as well...

Go up the street to Antique and Modern Repair. On Providence near Indian River, across from the elementary school.

What I really need to find is one that is not over 2 hours away from the house.  Anyone know of on on the peninsula or middle peninsula?

I haven't dealt with them yet but have spoken to the owner and he's pretty cool. The Armory doesn't do gunsmithing right now because of Bill the owner being busy maintaining their website. Atleast that's what I was told by one of their sales guy. Goodluck.

I have had work done there, the gun smith Bob Urina is absolutely the best.  I would go there first and always.  If you cannot get in, then Doug at Bob's Gun and Tackle is also a top notch gun smith.

I buy a lot of ammo at The Armory but I have never had any gun work done there so I cannot say.

Years ago I had the frame of my 1911 sandblasted by the Bill G. at the armory it was awesome as stated they currently do not have a gunsmith available. Yes ammo at the The Armory is the cheapest I've found around town as well.

Bobs Gun Shop has good gunsmiths there. They've fixed some things on my AR for me

From what I have heard, the Armory has pretty much stopped taking work.  I was sitting at Bob Yuirnas and three people walked in (in the hour I was there) that had been sent over from the Armory.

Bob is the best in town, but he is backlogged.

Thanks for the info guys, I have an AK kit that I built and I want to get my work checked out.

ETA: When you say Bob's do you mean Bob's down in Norfolk on Granby?

Bob Urina <sp> is a great gun smith, he did some custom work on my 1911.  Also, Bob's in Norfolk has some great gun smiths, Doug did some work on my S&W Model 66.  I highly recommend either of them for routine and / or custom work.  However, be prepared for a wait at either place.  I also highly recommend NOT to just drop and ask to have your handiwork evaluated.  They are professionals and should be treated as such, if you want them to do work, such as inspection expect to pay for their time.

My 2 cents.

Don't rely on the info on the Armory's website. I called to have some work done on my AR and a set of night sights installed on a glock and they said they no longer have a gunsmith been about 3 years since they have. I've heard great things about Bob's in Norfolk but each time I call down there and set up a time to stop down ..... I seem to waste not only my time but my gas because although they say they will be there they arent. And this had happened on three seperate times. I've had good luck with the gunsmith off Providence. great work and fair prices!

Oh yeah, I don't need them to just check out my handy work. I need to get the head space & timing checked, and I would like to either get it parkarized or blued.

Bob is the best around.  He is very very good.  But is slammed a lot with work.  He is very fair with his prices and worth the wait.  I have used him since I was 16 when he was at the old A&P range on va beach blvd.
