Friends: I've recently moved to Alexandria, and couldn't be happier! Compared to CT, this state is great is so many ways. I've joined VCDL, and maybe next year we can make restaurant carry a reality. Anyhow. I've got a couple of questions for the locals. 1) Where do you suggest I go to shoot? I do pistol shooting mostly, but am also interested in NRA HighPower rifle, IDPA, and 3-gun. I've been to NRA's very nice facility a few times, but it's a bit of a hike from where I live, and it tends to be really crowded. Also, are there any rifle ranges more conveniently situated than Quantico? 2) Are there any FFLs in Alexandria that handle transfers for a reasonable price? The Trophy room and Potomac arms are no more. It's sad because both were within walking distance from my home. 3) Are there any local class III dealers? Thanks! |

Welcome to the 'hood! I usually shoot at Gilbert's (in Newington, relatively near Springfield Mall). Friendly staff, gunsmith available, rental guns available also. Range costs are very reasonable. IDPA isn't particularly nearby. The NRA range has some matches, but like you, I find the distance too far in the evening, with rush hour traffic, etc. I think Blue Ridge Arsenal also has IDPA (mhoffman might see this and comment). There are some matches in St. Charles, MD (or near there) - basically, across the river and south a bit - not that far. Rifle shooting is not available close by. Bull Run Shooting Center (near Centerville) has shotgun sports such as trap, wobble trap, skeet, 5-stand, and sporting clays. Very reasonable rates, by the way. I've done all of my FFL transfers at Gilbert's. The cost was $ 15 up until about 6 mo. ago, now it's $ 25. But, multiple guns don't cost extra. My last transfer was 2 pistols from 2 different sellers. Total cost was $ 25. DK re: class III dealers - not in my budget, so not part of my mind share! I'm always willing, of course, to help you shoot yours. |

I belong to the Isaac Walton league over in Stafford, about 1 hour + of -. We have a 100 yard rifle range, pistol range, skeet range, Archery range, stocked pond, swingset for the little ones, and offer hunting during hunting season. It costs 100 bucks per year, with 100 dollar application fee. So first year will be 200, then 100 each year after. It is a GREAT deal, and a great family friendly environment. You will forget you are in Northern Virginia for a bit!!!...............priceless!!! Shoot me an I/M if you are interested. On the gun issue, you need to become familiar with Va Arms in Manassas. It is the gun shop for the area!! Welcome |
