There is a big new shopping/ eating development on the river in Yorktown:

Riverwalk Landing

It's a nice place to wander around, but just not a lot to it. Several speciality shops, etc. There are some other little shops located along the main street in Yorktown, just up from the waterfront.

There is a big restaurant in Riverwalk called  "Nick's Riverwalk Restaurant". Its very nice, but pricey. Down the street past the beach is one of my favorite places that has been there for years...the Yorktown Pub. All cash local bar and grill with good food and fun atmosphere. Good, fun, and cheap!

There is only one hotel on the waterfront...the Duke of York Motel. It's been there for a long time and is fine. They have a restaurant in side that has gotten great reviews.

Another good place to go eat is across the Coleman Bridge from YT in Gloucester. Its called Rivers Inn...sits on a big marina. They have an upscale restaurant aliong with an outside casual deck w/ sandwiches where you can have a beer and watch the boats go by.

The best thing about being down on the Yorktown waterfront is just hanging out on the beach. Just be careful and watch out for jellyfish.

Good info.

For someone that grew up around here and still lives around here, it's embarassing how little I know about the area that would be of interest to tourists/visitors.
