Gents, Where's a good shop or pro who teaches a state-approved CCW course? I've got mine, but my wife wants hers. I told her I'd go along with her. I don't mind helping her learn the stuff, but if we're dropping the dime, I want some good quality instruction. I don't plan on saying a word during the course, don't worry. But I want to make sure she isn't taught by whatever moron qualified to teach NRA Hunter's Safety. I'm looking for the whole nine yards - good quality instruction, range time, focusing on weapon safety, the laws, carrying tips, all of it. So, what say ye knowledge holders? Anything from Roanoke to Va Beach will be OK, we don't mind traveling. Trying to steer clear from NOVA, at least nothing past Glen Allen or so. But I'll go up there if the course has a good enough reputation. Make it a weekend trip or something. What do you guys think? |

I teach classes regularly on my private facility in Richmond. I specialize in familes, and have no problem with you "auditing" the course with your wife. That's actually my typical attendee - a family where the husband/dad has his permit and is looking for good training for the rest of the group. My approach is very much tuned to making people comfortable who aren't around firearms all the time, while stressing safety first and foremost. I've taught several hundred people over the years and have trained/instructed with some of the big schools. The course I typically teach for beginners is an all-day course - 1/2 classroom and 1/2 range. I'm still setting my schedule over the next few months. Drop me a line if interested and let me know if there's a date that works well for you. Of course, any of my courses meet Virginia's requirement for a concealed carry permit. Black Fox |
Do you offer any intermediate pistol courses? I have taken my basic handgun safety course for my CCW but would like something more possibly. Where are you located? |

Black Fox is a good fellow, and I think you would both enjoy his class. If for some reason you can't work out a date or time with him, just let me know. I'm currently a NRA Pistol, Personal Protection In the Home, and Home Firearm Safety Instructor. I think we'll be doing some classes starting in January. |
Yes, on the NRA side I teach a personal protection course (as do most of the others here I believe) and some non-NRA material separately. I don't know about other instructors, but I usually teach those courses by invitation only (former students or people I know). Unfortunately, the courses don't allow enough time to go back over the basics and I don't want to compromise safety. I'm just a guy that teaches on the side, though, and you may have better luck with one of the larger schools. I'm not saying I absolutely won't offer the course - just that a little background will probably be helpful before the course. I am located just SouthWest of Richmond - near Midlothian Turnpike and Route 288 if that helps. The private range on my property has 12 stations (10 35-yd and 2 100-yd) with a full backstop. We're class III friendly here, too I can say to everyone that I know VA-gunnut, Randy @ DT and the guys at Shooters Paradise - they're all quality people, and you won't be disappointed. That's the good thing about Virginia - you probably can't throw a stick without hitting a pretty good instructor. Another great option for those of you in Nova is Piedmont Instructors. Good luck! |
I live RIGHT there. What shop are you? Actually nevermind IM inbound |
