Applied for my ccw the other day.  Anyone know how picky Fairfax County is?  The clerk at the court made it sound like Fairfax doesn't like to issue them. Sounded very PRNY/NJ-ish.

Fairfax County really doesn’t have much say in it.

They do seem to take their time, but it’s not likely there’ll be any problems.

In fairness, they don’t ask for fingerprints, which some VA counties require.

They are picky, but whether they like it or not they SHALL ISSUE the permit to you, provided you have been good.    They have 45 days from the time you submit the application to the clerk to have it ready for you.  If you have any problems, contact the VCDL.

Did you move here recently from NY or NJ?

Good luck!

I moved here a year ago from NY.  I am a good boy. I work for Uncle Sam, and have to maintain a clearance (if ya know what I mean).  I only went to NY because of work, not by choice.

If I'm not mistaken, according to changes in the law that went into effect last month, the clerk of the court MUST issue you a temporary permit if your application has not been approved within 45 days.  (Assuming you weren't denied!!!  )  VA_Gunnut has a good post tacked to the top of this forum that covers some of the key sections of Virginia law.  You might want to check it out.

I live in Fairfax.  They have 45 days.  On the 47th I called and asked politley where the hell my permit was.  She said hold on................................................................................................You are approved you can come in and pick it up.  The next day (48th) I recieved my letter of aproval.

It had been mailed on the 46th day.   But I got it.

It still amazes me the amount of difference between NOVA and the rest of the state when it comes to this issue.

It is as if there are two states.  Everything east of Lexington or so and then the western portion of the state.

I'm just glad our permits down here only run $15.

I've been issued a CCW in both Alexandria and Pr. William County.  Both mailed my permit to me.  Friends of mine have had theirs issued by Fairfax and have told me that they won't do this.  Fairfax makes you come pick it up in person and not a day sooner than the 45 day period.  Just another way to make your life difficult.   Of course, another friend of mine who lives in Stafford Co. just got his recently.  He didn't have any problems with getting the permit, but he found his name and address  published in the local newspaper.  Seems this local birdcage liner believes this "public" information should be published.
