Hi all:

I just posted this on the Missouri page in response to to a question regarding where to go for tactical firearms training. As a Chicago guy, I thought it would be helpful to post this here as well.

I most highly recommend Asymmetric Solutions in Farmington, Missouri, about an hour south of Saint Louis. I just finished spending a week-end with these guys and it is hard to express how really impressed I was with the entire operation. More so, I am not quite a newcomer to firearms training. I am an NRA Instructor in multiple disciplines and have been shooting for over 40 years. I have trained with various other schools over the years, and have some basis for comparison.

First, as to the staff and instructors at AS. Not only are they top notch, but actually really liked to actually teach. My instructor for Tactical Carbine training was Zak. His ability to teach was outstanding. He also showed remarkable patience with some one like me who, shall I say lost my Greek--god like body a longtime ago. I am mid sixties and not the most physically fit and mobile person you have met. No problem. John, one of the principals, made you feel sincerely welcome and almost like one of the family. For those who may have some trepidation about going to your first formal training school, these guys are absolutely where you want to go. And another point. The instructor staff is made up of of former military, special forces, and police. In my experience this is not always a good thing. Some schools with this type of staff offer a very rigid "it's my way or the highway" type of training. These guys know that there may be more than one way to do something and respect that. This is not common with a lot of ego fueled instructors, especially in dealing with civilian instruction and students. Simply put, the mission of military/police is not the same a a citizen with a CCW license.

Second, the facilities are excellent. Unless you are willing to travel out West to Gunsite or a few others, it will be hard to find such a large 1800 acre facility for multiple training experiences.

Last, a lot of you are really fortunate to have this type of place so close to you. I came from just outside of Chicago, not quite next door. However, timing being right, I would return to work with these guys in a heartbeat.

Congrats on finding a good school.

If I'm not mistaken there are plenty of equally good schools that wouldn't have required you to drive five plus hours to attend.  I'm not even a training junkie by a long shot and I know that.

Yes, there are certainly some very good places to train in Illinois as well. However, I suggest you look at AS's web page, http://www.asymmetricsolutionsusa.com/civilian/, look at the variety of courses offered, then check out the bios of the instructors, and you may see why I ended up so high on this place. And of course I can't comment on schools that I have not attended so consider my write up simply an expression of my experience at this training facility, not a comparison and/or contrast with other facilities.

They really do have some top notch training. If you watch their facebook page they offer some killer deals at time.
