Hi!  We just decided very, very last minute that we're making a trip this weekend to Indiana.  We're traveling with 3 kids and looking to split the trip into comfortable legs.  One of those legs will put us about midway into Illinois along hwy 57.

It's really hard to tell from looking at online information if we'll wind up in a bad neighborhood or in a place so small that everything shuts down at 6PM.

Somewhere around Effington or Charleston seems to be the general area we'd be looking to stay overnight.  Any particular recommendations?  We'll only be staying the evening/night but would enjoy the opportunity to get out and about a bit to see any attractions or enjoy a nice meal.

Thanks!

Effingham has truck stops, so some places should be open 24/7. The I-70 portion running through Effingham has been under construction over the last few years. They are getting close to being done but the last time I went through (a few months ago) the exits were still messed up and were easy to miss.

The only place I've been to in the Mattoon/Charleston area is the airport, which has a nice little restaurant.

Thanks guys!  I think our plans are up in the air right now and we may be playing it more by ear as to where we stop/stay.  Looks like it'll be one of those, "Ok, we're tired now and ready to stop and that place doesn't look too bad" type things.
