The Action Shooting Sports Department at the Aurora Sportsmen's Club has two events scheduled for November.  The Action Shooting Sport events are a great way to get your rifle "off the bench" and develop new skills geared towards practical marksmanship. The events are held at the Aurora Sportsmen's Club in Waterman and are open to the public.  November's events are as follows:

November 9, 2013 - Practical Precision Rifle (PPR)
November 16, 2013 - Practical Rifle

Advanced registration is available on-line.  On-site registration is available only if there are any slots left.  Additional information and on-line registration links can be found here:

Wow very cool flyer!! It is awesome to see how much the program has grown over the past few years. Starting with Practical Rifle, which is the staple of Action Shooting Sports at ASC, to the inception of Practical Precision Rile and 2 Gun Combat Shoot.

I have been participating in Practical Rifle for the Past 2 years, and I must say, I haven’t shot from a bench since. Static shooting has become a thing of the past and shooting for groups has become boring for me. The only groupings that I am worried about these days are hitting the ZERO rings.

I highly recommend ANYONE with a semi-automatic, magazine fed rifle to come out and try Practical Rifle this month, Saturday November 16th. You won’t be disappointed!!

I also help run the action shooting department at ASC. I have been participating in PR for nearly 2 years (have only missed one event) and have been on the team that makes the event possible for over a year now. The evolution of the event is fantastic. We have constructed a ton of new props, have taken stages to a whole other level and have a great bunch of participants (along with great workers) who come out for this. I highly recommend giving this a try, whether you are a seasoned operator or novice shooter this is for you. Just about every person who comes out to give it a try comes back for more. I would happily answer questions for anyone who has them or is on the fence about this. You can email me directly at [email protected]

Hope to see some of you out there!!!

What happened on Saturday?  There was nothing on the club members forum to suggest PPR was cancelled.  I had the 600 all to myself.  It was al bit windy, but definitely a good day to shoot.

Great job from the 35 participants who braved 45 mile an hour wind gusts and sideways rain to shoot in the tough weather at the Practical Rifle event on Saturday! You find out really quick how well your gear works when you have conditions like these...

Due to the bad weather, score was not taken this weekend.

All targets were steel with ranges from 100 yards to 200 yards (except the infamous 2x4 wood posts that were being sawed down by lead).

A few things that I took away from Saturday's event:

1. The original VTAC 9 Hole Drill never gets old, it is always fun!
2. Hitting your target while shooting urban prone out of a 4" tall by 4" wide triangle at the ground, off your support side, is ridiculously tough.
3. 22 LR's actually do a decent job of cutting a piece of wood in half...

Next PR match is on December 21st. See you there!

Is the practical event ok for an extreme novice shooter? In other words, I've shot at ranges a handful of times, but would basicly rank myself a beginner.
But that looks like the kind of event I'd be interested in doing, plus actually use the warbelt outside the house!

Yes, we welcome new shooters.  Please let us know at check-in that it is your first time; we will just have a quick rifle review with you to review safety procedures.  The key for the new shooter is to go at your own pace; you can run the stages nice and easy and work yourself into a proficient shooter over time.  It is a great group of people that participate, let your squad know that it is your first time out and they will certainly help you out.  Don't forget to bring a chamber flag.

Hope to see you on the 21st, they guy running check-in with the tan war belt is me, feel free to say hi.
