The wife and I are making our first trip to IGOLD this year. Question is, what do you usually take?

I was thinking a small pack for the phone, tablet, and maybe umbrella/rain jacket for weather, but does that make getting through security a nightmare?

How about some input from the frequent flyers?

I recommend taking a minimum of items with you. Keep an eye on the weather forecast so you dress appropriately. One thing I've seen people do that I think is a good idea: take a large zip-lock and while waiting in line for your turn through the metal detector, put your metal objects, belt etc. in the bag. It makes things move much quicker if you can just drop the bag on the conveyor belt and grab it again afterwards.

With all of us going in at the same time security is slow.

I took about 40-50 copies of information I thought was pertinent
to drop in offices of people I thought should read it.

The receptionists are very polite and patient.

Comfortable shoes!!

Last time I went I took a 1911.

P.S. don't bring a pocketknife into the Capitol.
