Anyone know where I can take an introductory rifle course in or around Chicagoland/Northern Illinois or even Southern WI?  I've looked at the courses offered by some of the training groups around here (Spartan Tactical, Midwest Training Group, Illinois Gun Works), but none of them seem to offer an introduction to the rifle course.  Spartan Tactical has an introduction to the AR-15/M-4, but I want to start off with something much more basic (like firing a bolt action .22 or something - I've never fired a rifle before).  Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Go to the isra.org website and look for dates for Appleseed shoots.  They hold them a few places in N. IL.

More or less exactly what you are asking about.

ETA:  Appleseed Homepage

It looks like no more are currently scheduled, but they always have a BUNCH of
these events.  You'll just have to wait a bit to see when the 2013 schedule is posted.

Appleseed. They'll give you good basics.  Most are during warmer months.

I'd recommend Appleseed as well. Went with the GF back in 2008. Learned a lot, and was a much better shooter after those 2 days. If you don't currently have a rifle or one you can borrow, something along the lines of a 10/22 would work out well. There were some folks there with bolt-guns, but it makes the class tougher,

Hope this helps.

I would recommend USRA.  We don't have the 2013 schedule up yet but keep an eye on the site.

I thought about mentioning this as well, but I'm not really familiar with the classes offered, and wasn't sure if it was as .22 oriented. From a quick look at the site, looks like there's been some handgun & high-power classes this year.  Anything you can share on whats planned for next year?

Is it still a bunch of the former Appleseed instructors, or a lot of new folks now too?

Thank you, guys, for responding.  I had never heard of the Appleseed shoots before.  I checked out the website and their shoot looks exactly what I'm looking for.  Now just got to see when there will be one around me.

Also, the USRA courses sound good, particularly the American Marksman course.  That is exactly what I'm looking for.  I'll keep checking back to see if a schedule gets put up for IL (I got error messages when I tried).

If anyone has any other recommendations, I'm all ears.  Thanks!

I have been to two of them, the training is excellent and best of all it is easy on the budget. I was at the last one of the year (Waterman) and they said to keep checking the website for the 2013 spring schedule.

Next spring, we will be offering basic rifle classes and combat shooting (pistol/rifle) classes at Aurora Sportsman Club in Waterman. Also every 3rd Saturday of the month, we offer the practical rifle event that is open to the public.  If you want more info, go to aurorasc.org and look for the Practical Rifle tab.

United States Rifleman's Association will continue to have American Marksmanship and Intro to Defensive Handgun in Illinois in 2013.  Chillicothe will have American Marksmanship and Intro to Defensive Handgun on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend as well as another couple classes of intro to Defensive Handgun.  The classes will also be held at Waterman, Buffalo Rock, DeWitt County, and some other ranges.  USRA is also taking off in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico.

There is an advanced handgun class in the works as well as a tactical rifle class.  Hopefully these can be online in 2013.

American Marksmanship is very .22 friendly.
