Hi there guys,
I might be taking a Job opportunity southeast of Chicago by the Port. Im looking for some information on some nice rural communities. I have a small family so good schools would be important too. Any suggestions? Thanks Jim |

Honestly, hit up the Indiana HTF or http://ingunowners.com/forums/index.php
Illinois sucks for a lot of reasons: Taxes, Gun Laws, Politics, etc. etc. If you're working southeast of Chicago (near the Indiana border) and want rural land, just live in IN. |

There are a whole host of decent rural communities along I-57, which I think pretty much would take you near straight to work.
You pretty much want to look at locations beyond Matteson to the South. How far depends on what you are looking for and how far you want to drive. Monee, Peotone and Manteno all strike me as pretty quite little farming and bedroom communities. Pretty much draw a line straight west from the spot where US 30 crosses the state line -anything to the North is Suburban to Urban and crowded. Most points to the South are more rural / small town / farming. A bit farther West you also have Mokena and Frankfort, but they are fairly expensive and very suburban. I am not really a fan of the communities along US30 from I-57 to the East. I suppose there are some decent parts, but I have seen plenty of bad over that would keep me from living over there. Don't know much about the schools so can't help you there. I don't spend any time on I-57 since I live along the I-55 corridor so I really can't tell you what travel times would look like. |

You have to realize that for someone who is not a sheep waiting to get fleeced or a parasite on the public teat, Illinois in one of the top five shithole sates in the US. If I didn't live here already, yo couldn't pay me enough to come here, just like NJ and CA. So forgive us serfs if we have nothing good to say about the People's Republic of Illannoy, but the state sucks and as hard as it is to believe, it gets worse on a daily basis. There is no hope parasites, connected people, metrosexual males and stupid soccer moms will continue to vote in ulrta-liberal democrtas and a few RINOs here and there until we are in receivership, then what happens, who knows? It had better be a damn good job to come to this steaming pile of shit for. I hope to be gone in four more years.

My sister and her family live in Highland, Indiana, which is a very nice community, good schools if you have kids, people are decent. Schererville and Merrillville are other communities, along with Munster and Dyer. Avoid Hammond, East Chicago, and Gary.
You could live in Will County Illinois along the I-57 corridor as others suggested, but you'd have no CCW, have to have a FOID card(pay a small fee to the State Police, I think it's $10, fill out a form online, send in a passport photo, and you're golden. Got mine in April of 2010) to go shooting anywhere, unless you ride on someone else's, and the biggie is you need a FOID to possess firearms and ammo. Indiana has CCW, lifetime CCW at that, ability to have NFA toys if that's your thing, and the taxes are also much lower, among other things. |

Looking at Crown Point In Vaparaiso In I don't care as long Im within an Hour one way. I've heard some iffy things bout Crown Point. I worked in Valparaiso(also known as Valpo for short) area in 2009 and it's nice. You could get a home in a subdivision but have an acre, enough to shoot. |

Thank you all for the replies. I took the Job with Ford Mo Co. Im not going to move my family until next spring. Any suggestions for a cheap motel to get me throughout the next couple weeks. Im open to an inexpensive studio apartment or room as well. Jim Residence Inn at 80/94 and Kennedy Avenue, which is Hammond but it may as well be technically Highland considering the town line is south of the turn in from the expressway.) |
