Here's the deal guys:  My inlaws want me to take my wife's teenage cousin hunting this fall.  The boy has never shot before, so I want to get him up to speed.  That means range time.  I've looked around online, and the only real options I'm seeing is dewitt county sportsman's club and Darnall's, but I don't really feel like signing up as a member just for 3-4 sessions at a club that's 200 miles from home.

I need to know about any public ranges I can find.  MO has state run ranges but I can't find any information on any in IL, not even sure if you guys have got any.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Abe Lincoln club is closed to new members even if I was inclined, and I'm not inclined.  Many of the rest are indoor ranges, and I just don't see how productive it's going to be shooting slugs out of a shotgun indoors at 50 or 75 feet or whatever, and that's even if they allow slugs indoors, which I very much doubt.

I can't believe that you guys don't have state ranges, I really feel for you guys, fine state ruined by Crook county.

If there's anyone else who can help me out here, I'd appreciate it.  We're supposed to be doing this tomorrow, and so far I've got no place to shoot.

Just giving you options. You sound desperate and taylorville and effingham both have out door shotgun and skeet shooting ranges if anyone would really want to shoot it anyway.

He should take the hunter safety course, however he does not have to the first year.  If he gets the Apprentice Hunting License and hunts with a supervising hunter. Which most first year hunters do anyway, also it is a cheaper license.

There are public ranges - few and far between through.  South of Bethany on the Shelbyville Fish and Wildlife Area is a free Hand Trap Range.  It is only  for shotguns with shot shells.
Do not shoot slugs, pistols or rifles on that range.  Range slobs shot and tore things up.  Now if a CPO comes by and finds shooting other than shotshells there, they will issue citation.

Also Windsor Gun Club east side of Lake Shelbyville.  New indoor range in Macon, IL.

Enjoy

I'm a member of the Effingham Sportsmans Club. Super nice facility. And super reasonable $$$ too.
