Hey all.   Can I transport arms in cases and in the trunk through Crook Coutny/Chicago?  What if I were to stop somewhere in the city and get a meal...am I in violation of the law?

Thx

What kind of guns?  If its something that is not currently legal in chicago (and I don't remember the specifics of the post mcdonald law changes to say what that is), you'd need to be covered by fopa. http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/usc_sec_18_00000926––-A000-.html which essentially says that your gun needs to be legal in your origin and destination, unloaded, and with neither the gun nor ammo readily accessible.

Never the less stories exist of people getting arrested with guns that are illegal in nyc on connecting flights and such even though fopa protections do/should apply and wind up spending money having to fight the charges.

I'm not aware of any case law that covers "flexibility" of trip such as hotel stays, meals, and fuel stops.  I don't believe I've ever read anything about it covering magazines either.  So essentially you probably should be protected, at least in what seems like the spirit of the law.  As the old saying goes though, you can beat the rap but you can't beat the ride.

If the item is not legal in that location do not remove it from the vehicle, gas station stop with the vehicle attended is fine but leaving to go in to eat may be a problem. Plenty of good places to eat in the suburbs, why give chicago your money
