From the appleseed.info website:
The Appleseed Program is designed to take you from being a simple rifle owner to being a true rifleman. All throughout American history, the rifleman has been defined as a marksman capable of hitting a man-sized target from 500 yards away — no ifs, ands or buts about it. This 500-yard range is traditionally known as "the rifleman's quarter-mile;" a rifleman can hit just about any target he can see. This skill was particulary evident in the birth of our country, and was the difference in winning the Revolutionary War.

Basically Appleseeds are two day rifle marksmanship events where the attendee is taught rifle form and techniques that will allow them to engage targets as described above.  You provide the rifle, ammunition and time, and the instructors provide instruction, the range, targets, etc.

Appleseed is an event where they train the average rifle owner how to use our rifles as for forefathers did. All throughout our history, American's have been known as excellent marksman, and this was especially proven during the Revolutionary War.

At the Appleseed, you'll learn how to hit a man sized target at 400 yards, and learn a bit of American history as well.

I can not recommend Appleseed enough for those that really want to know how to shoot a rifle with iron sights. The guys that run it are all volunteers and are very dedicated to helping you become an expert marksman.

My fiance and I went last year, we each bought and built up a Ruger 10/22 (her's scoped, mine adjustable irons) and we both made Rifleman(it's not easy to do!).

Here is a little info on building up a "Liberty Training Rifle" as they are known:

I enjoyed the Appleseed so much, I think I'm going to go back this year with a K-31 Swiss and see if I can make Rifleman again with a bolt action center fire!

Checking in. I will be at the ASC shoot (Waterman) in April.

There will be fliers and info posted at Buffalo Rock and IRSA ranges for you shooters who frequent them. There are several Illinois shoots this year scheduled at Waterman, Ottawa, Bonfield, and other ranges. Odds are you can find friendly places and friendly people that work for you.

Why Appleseed? Can you hit a man size target at 500 yards? Do you know how and why we have the freedoms we do? Have you ever received two solid days of quality motivated firearm instruction for the low price of $70? Do you enjoy the fellowship of the firing line?

If you can't answer yes to any or all of these questions, Appleseed is for you. It is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to creating Riflemen.

A full schedule of 2010 Illinois shoots can be found at: Illinos Appleseeds

I suppose I can't do this do with a bipod or sandbags could I?  Since I only have one arm right now.

The instructors are *very* accommodating. The motto is "shoot what you have". And if that's what you have to work with, then that's what you'll learn with.

My only concern would be your frustration at not having your full facilities.

I have full feeling of the hand but right now my weight bearing is about 5-7#.  I'm sure by that time I'll be better (I better be or I'll be pissed) but I would like to give a session a try as soon as I could.  I think that my only issue at that time would be long term holding of the rifle at the time.   A month is long time away.

Wife and I are signed up for June event at Darnall's in Bloomington.

This will be our first Appleseed and both of us are looking forward to it. How can you beat $72.19 (+ ammo and lunch - Sue puts out a great lunch spread too) for a weekend of instruction? FYI - women / children / men in service are free of charge.

Hope to see a few others there!

For anyone who hasn't been to an Appleseed, PLEASE check one out. Not only are they a fun way to learn rifle marksmanship skills (or polish them if you're already an expert), but they offer what is probably the best "bang for the buck" when it comes to firearms training. Sign up –– you won't regret it!

Alton and Bonfield are full.
Durand and Waterman still have some spots left.

I'm planning on taking advantage of the free onsite camping at Durand.
