Cause I am apparently going to have to move to Illinois.

Aside from no NFA, and getting a FOID, and leaving my .45 at home, what else will I have to give up while in the Peoria area?

Also, anyone have a good place to do some online apartment hunting?

Don't leave the .45 at home, bring it with.

Rifles/shotguns/pistols have to be unloaded and in a case. You can have loaded magazines anywhere you want, just not in the gun.

I think I remember something about Peoria and pistols though. Maybe some of the locals can chime in.

If you read that which was actually meant for people just traveling through IL, but it has a lot of pertinent info.

The good news is that Peoria has a couple different shooting clubs, a fair amount of gunstores, and a fairly active group of arfcommers who go out to dinner with each other every once in a while if you're into that kind of thing.

Welcome to the area.

This is for transportation only though depending on the city laws. Considering the OP said he's moving here that does not pertain to ones home unless otherwise stated by the city laws.

Yeah, I should have stated that what I typed is for transport.

I meant no CCW.

As in when I go out and about I have to leave it at home.

Also mad cause I have to get rid of this guy:

Been reading up on it, and it seems I need to get a 'deadly weapon license' and register my pistols and pocket knives with the Police Superintendent in Peoria.  Not happy about that at all.
Also apparently cannot carry a pocket knife, or a multi-tool if I am reading that right.  Sheesh,  Is it legal to carry a tube of anal lube?

Ok, now do I need to have a FOID before I move my guns into the state, or how does that work exactly?

Look at Forest Park Apts in Peoria Heights, that way you don't have to dick around with peoria laws, but are 5-7 min from downtown.

Keep your SBR and just do a pin and weld with a extended flash hider.  Why lose money in the sale?

LMK if you need anything, welcome to IL.

Why do you have to leave your .45 at home? lack of CCW?

Isnt there some deal about if you live in Peoria and you buy a pistol in Peoria there is an extra hoop to jump through...?

I have never bought a gun in the City of Peoria.

I would not live in Peoria. There are several nice communities close. Unless your new job requires you to live within city limits, I wouldn't do it.

Do you have kids? The schools in Peoria have a bad reputation. Property taxes are higher.

There are three (four if you include the skeet and trap range north of East Peoria) ranges within an hour of Peoria (or closer depending on where you live).

From my experience:

If you have a Peoria address and buy a handgun in Peoria, you have to fill out a fingerprint card thing. If like me, you have a Peoria Heights address, you can buy a handgun in Peoria without any issues.

Have not heard anything about a multi-tool regulation.

Ok, looking at a couple apartments in Pekin.  Don't have any kids, or a wife, so schools and associated concerns aren't a problem for me.    Plan is to live in an apt for a couple years, pay off some loans, then buy/build a house.

As for the local laws, The link HERE says if I live in Peoria Proper, I need to register all handguns or 'concealable' weapons with the Police Superintendent. . . .

Anyone mind giving me the name of the local paper?  Might be handy for finding more options for places to live. . .

And does anyone know if I have to have a FOID before I move my firearms into the state, or do I have a grace period to apply for one or what?

SBR isnt getting sold or molested.  Just stored in a different state.  Just mad that I have had it together less than 6 months and I have to put it up for several years at a minimum. . . .

IIRC, you can't pre-apply for the FOID. You have to move in and establish residence before applying.

I don't think there's any sort of "grace period". Just move your stuff in, and be quiet about it until your FOID shows up.

Hopefully, I'm wrong.

You have to have an Illinois ID or DL to get an FOID.

Not sure but any "grace period" may be related to the time frame you have to establish residency after relocating here (by obtaining the aforementioned ID or DL)

From the IL SOS website: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/general/most_faq.html#drivers

Drivers moving to Illinois may use their valid driver's license from their home state or country for 90 days. You may obtain an Illinois driver's license or identification card only if you are becoming a legal resident of Illinois. If you have a valid driver's license from another state or country, you may use it to drive in Illinois throughout your stay, if you do not plan to become a permanent resident of this state

You're kind of in a catch-22 (welcome to the state) because the sooner you get "Illannoy-ized" the sooner you can apply for an FOID; but the longer you go as an Illannoys resident without one the more in danger you are of being considered as violating the FOID law.

Maybe get an IL ID, apply for your FOID right away and maintain your current DL until your FOID shows up?

That actually sounds like the best way to accomplish it safely.

Until then, your DL says you're still a resident of IN, so you can't be hassled for not having a FOID, but at the same time it is in the works.

hehe,

just got back from trip #2 into the area.  Looks like I'll either be in Washington or Pekin.

Start date got moved up, so I will be moving next weekend.

Didn't sell the SBR, just moved it to a secure place in WI.  Need to go about securing a replacement, but that looks to be a couple months down the road. . .

You would be wise to have a FOID before moving your firearms into IL, but you need an IL address to get a FOID (IIRC)

just buy a new barrel for it thats 16 inch and put that on.   keep your shorty in the safe.  just in case.

Doesn't matter what length barrel is on it, the lower is contraband in IL as long as its part of the NFA registry.  If I stick a 16 inch barrel on it, its still an SBR.  And thus contraband in IL.  Moot point anyway, cause that is a URX2, and there aren't many folks who can swap a barrel around. . .

And now I hear that they are trying to pass a state AWB.

Ok, so let me get this straight.  No guns or ammunition until I get a FOID, and I cant get a FOID till I get a DL.  Are parts and components of either ok to have?   And a FOID takes up to 30 days for approval IF its approved.  Yes?

Great, so I'm going to have to figure out what to do with a 4400 lb safe full of guns and about a thousand pounds of ammo and reloading stuff until I get one. . . .

Got moved in today.  Got a list of stuff to get done, so I won't post much, but I am already missing my stuff.  Except for the ammo, which I am not looking forward to moving here.  Hate moving ammo.  Its heavy.  And I live on the top floor. . .

Get a pistol lower and take the upper with you.  Find a bank in Indiana that has Safety deposit box's and store the registered sbr lower  there.
