| My Friends and I are looking for a place to Camp within 300 miles of Chicago. We aren't into the pre-set camp spots where you can drive your car right up to it. We don't mind a hike. What location would you recommend we plan to do a 3-day and would like to be armed so Illinois is really out of the question. |

OK, I will give it a shot. My wife and I camped at Rock Island state park in Wisconsin. Once we got to the island. We backpacked over to the remote sites about one mile from the dock. At the end of the day after the last boat leaves. You won’t be going anywhere until morning. Bring a water filter and all the food and beverage that you can carry. A good flashlight, 2-way radios and a folding saw are also a good idea. It’s great place to try some of your SHTF gear. Of course it is Wisconsin so no guns, but it was a cool trip. I hope this helps!!!!!! Link |

There are a TON of places near 80/71 area in utica near starved rock that are GREAT campsites.
Check out that area. Lots of touristy stuff around there to keep yourself busy too. You really won't need to be armed at these campsites, regardless, you can keep it in your tent or fanny pack it while on the site, then throw it in the car. |

I really like Shawnee National Forest, FAR south IL. Kettle Moraine, northern unit, in WI is nice. but those both would be out of the question, AFAIK, since you want to be armed. Tagged for updates.... Don't really have to be just kind of want to, But definitely no a deciding factor. If anything I'll just do the old Illinois carry trick gun and ammo separate at the bottom of my ruck. I just want it more for personal protection rather then fun. I'll check out both of these places. OK, I will give it a shot.

Link Quick question, do you have to reserve a site or can you primitive camp doesn't really say on there website and the dates we are planing on going all the sites seem to be reserved The primitive (remote) sites as I recall were A,B,C,D,E. Yes, you will need to reserve them especially at this time of year. We went twice and it was in September both times during the week. One of the days we were the only people there except for the ranger. The first time we stayed at site A. The second time was site D witch was way better. Some friends met us up there and we had two tents on site A and three on site D. They didn’t give us any problem with it. The island also has some Geocaches if you have a GPS. |
