Im looking for information.  I'm recently out of the military and back home in Orland Park.  I miss hitting the firing range and began thinking about building or buying an AR-15.

My question:  From researching on the net I just learned that "assualt weapons" are now illegal to have in cook county.  Does anyone know if there are any provisions for former military?

Also, will a licenced gun dealer be able to sell me a rifle or lower reciever because of my residence in cook county?

Any info is greatly appreciated on this or what anyone does to get around it.

God bless America

welcome to the board and thank you for your service.....

as for owning an "assault"rifle in Crook coounty, it depends on what city you belong to  .... afik, as long as you are in Chicago proper, then you are out of luck... i live in cook county but in a different city and i have a couple of AR's and an AK and an assortment of handguns with ammo to boot....it really depends on where you live...

as for any military concessions.... some people will chime in for more info.. i hope they do have something for former military but i am not holding my breath if Chicago will ever allow decent people to own guns..

There are quite a few "home-rule" towns within Cook County that do not hold to the ban, allowing their residents to own EBRs.  The only definite way to find out if yours is one of them seems to be contacting the local police chief and asking.

I know there was a member here recently that received a positive response from the Chief in Tinley Park, but only after receiving a a conflicting report from one of his subordinates, so ask high.

Gun stores will not care where you live since it's not illegal to own, just to have within county (or certain city) limits.

I really don't know about military exemptions and the like, hopefully somebody will chime in on that one here.

Another option is to buy them and keep them outside of the county or in a friendly neighboring town.

Hope this helps and Thank You for your service!

Don't think there is any exceptions for military unless performing official duty, etc.
