I will be coming to Illinois this week and I have a few questions I would like to get answered before I go.

Can I have High Cap mags in Illinois?  I will be bringing my G17 with 17 rounds if possable.  Also what are the laws on having a gun in your state?  Must be cased I am guessing, but does the case need to be locked?

Can a normal person (like me) carry FOX pepper spray or do I need something special to carry it?

and

Any legal limit on Blade length of a carry knife?  Or can you even carry a kinfe I should ask also.

Thanks for any help, just want to make sure we are legal when we are coming over

Welcome to the PROI [People's Republik of Illinois].  But it's not that bad if you stay outside Shitcago.

High cap mags are fine, so long as you aren't in Chicago or some other municipality that prohibits them.  Check HERE to see.

Yes, UNLOADED and ENCASED.  No concealed or open carry in PROI.  Case does not have to be locked, and you can have ammo (e.g. a loaded magazine) inside the same case as the firearm, just not IN the firearm.

Somebody else can address this.

IIRC no statewide length limit for fixed blade knives, although Chicago and other municipalities do have restrictions.  Chicago's length limit is 2.5 inches, IIRC.

Of course, switchblades and self-opening knives are illegal statewide:

Sec. 24‑1. Unlawful Use of Weapons.
   (a) A person commits the offense of unlawful use of weapons when he knowingly:
       (1) Sells, manufactures, purchases, possesses or
carries any bludgeon, black‑jack, slung‑shot, sand‑club, sand‑bag, metal knuckles, throwing star, or any knife, commonly referred to as a switchblade knife, which has a blade that opens automatically by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in the handle of the knife, or a ballistic knife, which is a device that propels a knifelike blade as a projectile by means of a coil spring, elastic material or compressed gas; or

Thanks silascobb for the information.  I will be no where around Chicago and most of the time will be out in the country side doing some hunting, but ya never know what will happen, hence, being prepared.

Where are you going?  Area wise? No need for too many details.    The weather took a shit here today.

Get ahold of Deerkillindad , or even thebeekeeper,  they live closer than I , but I am sure you can get some input.   You just missed our Springfield dinner....Last Sat. Night.    Met them both, good folks.   Good Luck.

I probably have the spelling all jacked. But they would be the one I would talk to.

Next Sat we are having a dinner in Bloomington , 1Hr North. You can check our HTF, for details.

Another relatively minor point to make--the case has to be designed to hold a firearm. Don't just throw it in the glovebox or something.

IIRC encased means fully enclosed, so not in a holster only. Something that closes completely.

It doesn't matter where in the car you have it, as long as it's encased and unloaded. My personal policy is in the trunk, because it avoids questions if I were to be stopped, but YMMV.

Springfield has no bans on mag capacity. As for a knife you have to follow the state code which is blade length of under 4" (I think) Pepper gas is ok here, but not in Shitcago. West of Spfld would be Jacksonville area.

>No problem with high capacity magazines outside of Chicago or the suburbs.

>The firearm must be unloaded, enclosed in a case and not immediately accessible for out of state people traveling in a motor vehicle.  The case does not have to have a padlock or other outside locking device.  There is some confustion about this at times, because in state people do not have to worry about accessibility.  I afraid that you do.

Can a normal person (like me) carry FOX pepper spray or do I need something special to carry it?

>No problem with carrying pepper spray.  If you use it unlawfully, it would be considered Battery.

Any legal limit on Blade length of a carry knife?  Or can you even carry a kinfe I should ask also.

>No problem with the knife.  You will see alot of people carrying lockback knives clipped to pants pockets in central Illinois.  I wouldn't carry a Bowie knife or a trench knife; it would draw attention.

Welcome to Illinois.  I hope you have a good time and enjoy your stay.
