Assault weapons ban now campaign fodder

SPRINGFIELD -- Fresh from a primary victory, Gov. Rod Blagojevich rallied with families of crime victims backing a proposed assault weapons ban Thursday and blistered Republican challenger Judy Baar Topinka for opposing a ban.

The Democratic governor called Topinka's position a "shocking and shameful capitulation" to the National Rifle Association and the Illinois State Rifle Association, but Topinka aides said enough gun laws already exist.

Blagojevich also challenged Topinka to 10 debates before the November election, which her staff said she was happy to discuss--especially if the meetings include state Sen. James Meeks (D-Chicago), who is considering a third-party run for governor.

Blagojevich had refused to debate his primary opponent.

Topinka's camp dismissed the governor's gun comments as a publicity stunt. "He puts it out in the headlines," said Topinka spokesman Roger Germann, "but he doesn't deliver."

An assault weapon ban failed in the House by two votes a year ago, and Blagojevich cited the recent shooting deaths of two girls in Englewood, Starkesia Reed, 14, and Siretha White, 10, as more reasons to keep pushing for a ban.

The proposed ban will be named in honor of the two slain girls, said Rep. Edward Acevedo (D-Chicago), a Chicago police officer who is sponsoring the ban.

"Those two little angels who lost their lives in Englewood, they will not be forgotten," said Acevedo, speaking to people who rode buses from Chicago to rally at the state armory and meet with lawmakers at the Capitol.

With the General Assembly scheduled to adjourn in two weeks, Acevedo said the support he has for a ban may have slipped slightly since last year because it is now an election year.

But Blagojevich lobbied several lawmakers in his Capitol office to support the ban, including Rep. Dan Brady (R-Bloomington), a hunter who said he is troubled the bill might make criminals out of law-abiding gun owners.

"But that's certainly not going to prohibit me or cloud my vision from listening to what someone has to say from the opposing side," Brady said.

Gun rights activists asked whether the special gun crime unit Blagojevich set up at the Illinois State Police last year had done anything to stem the flow of guns.

"The solution is simple," said Richard Pearson, the executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association. "Enforce the laws on the books."

But Blagojevich, who courted gun rights proponents during his successful 2002 campaign for governor, said political leaders must decide whether to back an assault weapons ban or "cower and pander" to the gun lobby.

"I'm relying on the righteousness of our cause, in the common-sense nature of the choice we're asking the men and women of the General Assembly to make," Blagojevich said. "And I would remind them of the oath of office that we all took when we swore on a Holy Bible to do our duty. Part of that oath is to make sure that we protect our communities because that is what we were hired to do."

Supporters shouted "Hallelujah" and "Amen" as Blagojevich criticized Topinka's opposition to the gun control measure.

Chicago Police Cmdr. Joseph Patterson of the Englewood District said a ban on assault weapons would make neighborhoods safer by making the most deadly firearms harder for criminals to get their hands on.

Later, Blagojevich met in his Capitol office with Meeks, who won a Democratic primary for re-election but is considering a third-party campaign in November because the governor has said he would not increase sales or income taxes in a second term.

Meeks said he shared ideas with the governor about "education funding stuff." He said they agreed to meet again.Shortly after the rally, Blagojevich shook his head "no" when asked if he would rescind his no-tax pledge.

In other action, aides to Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan said she will not push her controversial proposal to require non-profit hospitals to spend more on needy patients this spring. Madigan plans to negotiate with hospital officials and introduce a new measure next session.

I think this is all very well said, but we have got to fight for our rights.  We can't just give up.  Giving up is NOT the American way.

Daley and Blago don't want to ban guns because of gangsters in Chicago ghetto. Instead, they want to ban it to get rid of gun owners. They don't care about poor people, black people or latinos, they just use their dire situation to justify their narrow view of civilized society or something even more sinister. Some good people chose to live in places like Englewood because they didn't have much choice. Once they save enough money, they move out, and therefore they don't care about the neighborhood very much. The indifference in the neighborhood provides gangs best cover for their deeds. Sometimes I'm just wondering that the ghetto is created delibrately just to keep a particular race down forever. There is no job in the neighborhood. The school district sucks and good teachers don't come in. Public services also suck and fees are never going down. Small businesses are impossible because nobody can afford the fees and no waiver is granted, not to metion that gangs might want their share of profit. What was created in Chicago ghettos is a depression that is no way near its end. Fear, depression and desperate poor only drive young people into lure of money and power that only street gangs can provide in these neighborhoods. What do you do with this f_cked up situation? You lower the fees or evne waive fees to do businesses in these area. You give bonus for teachers working in these neighborhood. You'll try to improve public services and make it affordable to poor people. Instead, Daley is closing schools, raising CTA fees and banning microbusiness, which is best for poor family, from existance in Chicago. Are these measures, just like early gun control laws, all delibrately set up to keep blacks down forever? I don't know, but I do know that Daley the major is not going to prevent black and latino young men from joining street gangs and killing each other.

Daley and his cohorts want to ban guns for other reasons. Gang violence, which they call it gun violence, is just another execuse to get guns banned. The movie Demolition Man actually depicted their mentality quite accurately. Dr. Cocteau is not a rare species among politicians in this country and sometimes their deed is driven by greed in the name of good for people. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of naive people who believe in the name of good for people, like "guns are for kill".  Naivity is a serious problem in this country. Naive people don't want to acknowledge the fact that this country is run by politicians who fit exactly into Eric-Cartman category. They want to feel safe and refuse to recognize that the chance of being attacked  exists all the time. They think guns are dangerous simply because "guns are for kill" and hate guns accordingly. They believe mocking lies by mass media on NRA that it is an organization of rich white racists who lobby for gun industry. And they thus become the tool of Dr. Cocteau's deeds. Gun owner happens to be on their way in creating their "civilized society". Isn't forcing everybody to be bended on one's own way by creating laws another form of violence?

There is no comming together,Deej. The interweb does not count as a powerful lobbying tool in this issue. It would be nice to march at the capitol and scare the living hell out of politicians, but the time where people come together over guns is over. Few in the big city care about firearm rights. WE must be forever vigilant.The Democratic machine in this state will eventually break down.It is comprised of misaligned gears(Blago,Durbin,Obamma)and out of sync components(Daley,Guitarrez,Jackson).WE just have to help the machine break down by occassionaly throwing a monkey wrecnh into the faltering gears(ARFCOM,ISRA,NRA).

Damn it to hell!   what is it with all the pessimism?   4 years ago when Blago slimed his way into office and the dems took control of the house.  Dailey thought he finally had an Il. congress that would rubberstamp any anti-gun legislation he wanted to ram down our throats, he was wrong.

 yes it has been a long 4 years but when in IL. history haven't there been a battle over gun rights,even when the repubs. controlled the Gov. mansion or the house?  

We need to stand together more so than ever before and don't give in to a defeatist attitude.  
 Blago's lunatic obsession with a AWB and gun control in general is going to hurt him in Nov., he is not going to win.    Topinka  has to court the gun lobby and she knows it.  If she turns her back on us during her campaign she will not win.

When she wins the general election we need to hold her feet to fire and make damn sure she doesn't backpeddle if an AWB  ever does reach her desk.    At least she won't be calling for an AWB every other fucking day!    

 I don't know, I guess this rambling is coming from someone who would love to but can't leave this godforesaken state.    I have no choice but to draw a line in the sand and stand my ground.
