I have read on a few other hometown pages where a machine shop owner will open his shop and give a class on machine shop stuff and the project you work on, under their guidance, is finishing an 80% lower.  I would sign up and pay for this gladly if it was somewhere close to home.  Does anyone know of anything like this in our area?

Or would anyone else be interested in a class like that?

I think only Barrett makes Barrett.  They won't let you take the design.  But there are companies who do or have in the past offered 80% single shot bolt gun receivers.  They sold the barrel and bolt as well, just needed to finish the receiver.  But these are the type that you pull the bolt to mount a round before reinserting it and firing.

I was thinking more along the lines of an AR 80% build.  I have a few 80% lowers that I need to mill and thought it would be a fun way to spend a weekend day taking a class and learning something while building a gun.

Hey Street_Doc!

There will be an industry partner attending the NVHTF Meet-n-Greet Shoot this Saturday that offers 80% Builds.

His handle is powthief19 and his website is http://www.billet80.com

You might want to contact him (real-name 'Chris') and see if he has any further info.

Please do report back what you find as some of us on here are interested in this as well (although many will not post for PERSEC/OPSEC).

Keep The High Ground,

The bad part is you are paying considerably more for an 80% lower and you still have to do the work.

I'll agree with that.

On the other hand, the extra cost and labor is worth the knowledge and fun you get out of doing it yourself.

Hey Guys,

If you have ANY questions on 80% lowers, please give me a call at 775 351 9494.

I'm not going to make it to the shoot this weekend.  I've got an off road racing addiction that needs to be addressed in Sacramento.

Hey Ron... want to bring one of my uppers out to play this weekend?  I've got one built up and ready to go bang bang.

I would enjoy learning to finish my own lower as well.

the process seems pretty straight forward jigs and mill.

curious what kind of additional fixtures may be required to hold the piece while milling though?

I would also be interested in a class/build party.

LOL!

Who?...Me?

Dude, we should definitely make that happen.
I think that there would be enough Northies interested between this thread and word of mouth that we would have an excellent turnout.

We can talk to GunMonkey at the shoot on Saturday and see if he has any people from around G-Ville that would be interested also.
When we schedule it, I'd like to meet up with Chris from "billet80" beforehand and see if he would do like to participate as a vendor.

We'll talk about this and the other stuff you got going on, too.
Will be good to catch up.

Ya'll are making it into a more complicated project than it really is.  Buy the lower and the jig, get on your drill press with bits and end mills, and go to it...I did one about a year ago and it turned out nice...harbor freight drill press, carbide end mills, time and attention to detail...that's it.

Yes, it is a fairly uncomplicated project.

BUT, we have a local facility (North) available that would accommodate a larger group of enthusiasts.

It would be a great learning experience, plus a great opportunity to do other related activities and network with both NVHTF brothers and other like-minded individuals.

We have done these 'workshops' in the past and they have been extremely well received.

Ah, well I retract my previously unthoughtout statement then...  Is this only for AR lowers, or can we do 1911 as well?  I do not have a 1911 and have thought I might like to make/get one...I have PDF blueprints for 1911 and have watched video of machining one, and it seems to be extremely difficult, if not impossible to do on drill press.

I have always wanted to do a pair including a AR and a 1911 both of which I built.  thought it would be a great thing to hand down to the kids someday.

Bill & Street_Doc,

Will you guys be attending the NVHTF Meet-n-Greet Shoot this Saturday @ the Mustang Range?

I will be there and I do believe that JimLostt will be there as well.

Haven't considered doing a 1911 Fab workshop, but would definitely be interesting.

Or maybe get all the raw materials and do a "build party" of sorts.

Yes i'm planning on being there.  It looks like I am working a 24 hour shift tomorrow so I won't get off till Sat morning but i'll head out that direction as soon as I can. If the event isn't starting till 10 or 11 I should be there in plenty of time.

We'll miss you, but I'll talk to JimLostt & Street_Doc about a 1911 build party and see what the possibilities are.

Will drop you an PM over the weekend if we are a go on this anytime soon...I'm thinking the AR 80% build would be first.

I am sure that we will do another one of these shoots again in the near future and would be great to meet you then.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind meeting some of the like-minded people in the area...I know NV-Geo a little bit, but haven't met anyone else yet, that I know of.

I might even be in for the 80% build too...ya never have enough guns of any kind...Maybe find out if a 1911 build would be from an 80% also, or if we could do it from a complete blank...if 1911 party is even possible.

Already been done and proven.  Very simple to do.

Arashi,

Where did you get $25 80% lowers?

BTW...the rifle that was built on a "Billett80" that was supposed to be sent for T & E at the N. NVHTF Meet-n-Greet Shoot on 19Oct2013...ummm, yeah it was nowhere to be seen.

Would still like to find an inexpensive 80% lower and YES! I would like to be attend if/when we decide to have a build party.

They were $25 in the Rockethub months ago.  They are $49 now.  Caveat, they have not yet delivered any receivers that I am aware of.

There are off Rock Blvd in Reno, so I took a chance.

I'm also expecting the ar15, ar10, and 1911 80%'s I ordered on rockethub for $145.00.  They are "supposed" to be done until December.  (That's next June in the gun world...)
