so, the wife and i have been talking about a potential move for many years now, and due to certain circumstances with a house we were going to buy, we may be at the perfect place to do so. i've travelled to the reno / carson / tahoe area many times for work, and have always considered NV high on my list of potential places to settle down. i'm an ME by degree, and currently work as senior manufacturing engineer for a local defense contractor. i also GM a commercial small arms manufacturer. so, i'm looking to my fellow ARFcommers for some guidance. is there any industry in NV that is particularly hot? what is your overall impression of the NV job market? are there any areas of the state i should avoid, or any i should look at with a specific focus? i'd like an area that has lake or river access and relatively low property taxes. i'd like to be able to pick up a place with 20 or more acres, so i'll be looking on the outskirts of any respective suburban areas. i'm also thinking that i'll limit my search to the upper 1/2 of the state, as i don't deal well with heat... any info would be greatly appreciated. |

Warning! Nevada has been hit exceptionally hard by the recession-depression and alternates between either having the highest or one of the highest unemployment rates in the country; especially the Reno-Sparks-Carson City-Lake Tahoe areas. Unless you are already in a profession that has a high demand – example nursing – I strongly recommend that you make sure that you have employment (a job) waiting for you when you get here!
Nevada is NOT the place you want to come to looking for a good job! |
| Being an engineer myself (I manage a firmware and electrical team), I have to say that the depth of jobs in the area for my profession are thin at best, even when times were better, but it does depend on where you are at in your career. The company I work at is presently looking for a mechanical engineer. Drop me a line and I'll send you a link if you're interested. |

good info guys, thanks. i knew the market there was going to be... tough... the good part is i'm not looking to "get out of dodge" RFN. i have about a year to get squared-away and moved, maybe a bit more. that should provide me ample opportunity to find something prior to making the actual move. right now we are still in the looking-at-our-options phase, and NV is on the list with UT, KY, and TN. incidentally, moving to a red state is high on our priority list. coming from ME though, that leaves just about every state in the union open excepting the "usual suspects"... i appreciate the offers from some of your folks regarding help with employment. i may contact some of you after the show season is over and i can dedicate more than a few passing moments. US Ord was an oddly good suggestion, but i currently do quite a bit of work for them. going after a job with a current customer is not the kind of situation i'm aiming to put myself in. |

Quoted: US Ord was an oddly good suggestion Oddly good is how I'd classify most of Nevada. ![]() Personally, if I'm relocating, I'm not too concerned about working for a former client/vendor, assuming my current company doesn't have a location where I'm going. Especially if it doesn't mean there is a change in the current client - vendor relationship, and that you leave on good terms. |

Nevada is a lost cause. Now it's time to wreck the place ( so to speak). There are way too many moochers, looters and idiot democrats here and way too much corruption at every level. Texas would be a better pick to move to. The housing prices will be better and there will be more job opportunities. For the moment I am stuck here so it's time to fill the wagon. Heap on the taxes and regulations like never before and let this place burn. I the legislature wont do it then referendum and these idiot democrats will go for it hook line and sinker.
And to answer your question is that we have a third party in this state and they gave us Harry last time. We tax the casinos at 50% and the unions at 75%. That is an extra 400 million a MONTH and that will buy a lot of welfare. $400,000,000/2,600,000 = 153.84 per month (1846.00 per year) for every person in this state. Time for the casinos pull their own weight and fix the mess they made. |

And our state assembly has a Democrat majority iirc. *barf* I'm thinking about buying another home in summer/fall 2013. But in AZ not NV. I give NV another 10 years tops before we're California-East. And I just don't do well living amongst libtards. Pity though, I really like NV. Edited to add: Assembly: 26 Dems, 16 Reps Senate: 10 Dems, 9 Reps, 2 Vacacies |

Harry Reid's last reelection had nothing to do with Teabaggers, Libertarians, or Greens. The NV GOP didnt even support their own candidate in his opposition (That would be "Fuck You, Raggio, for your petty behavior based on having been "slighted" by a woman. Oh, he's dead? Well...Bye.) Oh, and the NRA backing Reid was a fine FUDD touch. Run a good candidate and support that candidate and then your party might win. Horne easily won reelection because he was essentially unopposed. Nice job! As for the OP: Check stuff like Bently Nevada, GE in Gardnerville. If you have the skills, they may want you and there are lots of large acreage properties available in the area.
