If you are looking for a CCW class and are already a competent shooter I would highly recommend the free class at The Gun Store on Tropicana. The instructor was entertaining yet professional and informative. I honestly wasn't expecting much for free but walk away very impressed.

The class is 100% free and they didn't try to sell me anything. They even payed for the factory ammo for qualification.  I scored 344 out of 360 for qualification but I rushed some shots due to me being nervous.

Bob Eaton passes out so much bad information they should have paid you to take the class. Good luck on knowing what he told you is the truth or something he made up.

I finished mine today. Class and first gun were free, with $25 for the second gun. No selling of any kind. Didn't learn a thing (not exactly new at this, but I let my permit expire a year and a half ago, stupid, I know). Tony is funny as hell though (taught the morning portion of the session, old cop from Rochester, NY). They guys running qualifications didn't look old enough to buy handguns, but they were accommodating of the less experienced in the group. Still don't know why Nevada requires the whole class and qualification after the first go round.

Was the second gun a revolver? I hope they didn't tell you you needed to qualify with 2 semi-autos.

Glad you got to experience your course with Tony (you are lucky).

Uncle Tony is a friend of mine and he is one of the best, and most respected instructors I know.

He is one of a very few fellow instructors I will bow to.

The Man is a legend.

Yes, the law changed in July. Nice to not have to qualify with everything. The other guy was Ben. Nice guy, and he had good info on firearms handling for the new guys in the class. Several had their first guns on the 72 hour wait, so the second portion was geared towards them.

What is this business about scoring that I keep hearing about? We shot 5 rounds each at 3, 5, and 7, yards, and that was that...

Wow.

Just 15 rounds?

The State Minimum Qualification Standard is 25 rounds for handguns that hold 5 shots or less, and 30 rounds for handguns that hold 6 shots or more.

Each requires a Minimum Score of 70% to pass.

For 5 shot revolvers it is 30 rounds, for all others it is 36 rounds. At 3 yards strong hand for six (or five), reload then six more with the weak hand. Move to seven yards, six, reload, then six more, two hand hold. Last is fifteen yards, six, reload, then six, again, both hands. Passing score is 70% or better.

Oh. If that's the Gun Store's standard that's one thing. I though he meant it was the current State Standard.

As long as the qualification is equal to or greater than the Minimum Standard it is GTG.

I use a similar standard as TGS does in my courses.

As long as Tony is teaching CCW I will continue to take my renewal classed from him , if he should not instruct them anymore , I will then contact Joe.

Two of the best we have in the state of NV hands down.

I have learned plenty from Uncle Tony in the years I have been shooting with him.

Upon further reflection, it is quite possible it was 10 rounds at each distance. It's been a few years... But I am sure there was no switching of hands or any sort of formal scoring.

It was pretty casual and straight forward. Keep 'em in the circle and don't sweep the instructor and you were gtg.

You probably just forgot.

15 rounds just didn't sound right to me (even for a Revolver).

Looks like I'll be jumping into the CCW realm using the gun store too. I know guns pretty well so this should be easy.

Anyone know what the current wait time is for the CCW permit approval in the LV area?

Sent mine in 07-08-11 received back 08-22-11, issued date shows 08-18-11.  Once they get around to actually printing it they ship it out fast I guess.  I really like the 2 lines of info on the back now for semi/wheel gun approved as opposed to 2 card to hold all info.

Don't know why The Gun Store have been getting such a bad rap when it comes to the CCW classes.  Just took the class yesterday with a buddy of mine, and the class was FANTASTIC!  The instructors (morning & afternoon)  were VERY informative, with real word examples, and being a LEO was able to take things out of the "hypothetical" and into reality (kicking myself that i don't remember their names, since they were great...i do remember the morning instructor's wife was there...Gwen i think).

On top of the full day of instruction, they gave you a book on the current laws and regulations on caring concealed (as well as other reference material, like ammo ballistics, numbers of all the attorney general's in every state, and a few others)

After the full day of instruction, they gave you a quick run down on "gun safety at the range" and you walked over to qualify.  They tossed you the ammo, target, eyes and ears.  I actually rented a revolver from them to qualify with (on top of the semi-auto I brought).

If you passed, they tossed you your certificate, as well as all the documentation you would need to submit to Utah & Florida (and they have you some "tips" on how to make this process a little easier earlier in the class lessons).

For a total of $35 dollars ($10 rental , $25 to qualify with a "2nd" gun) the value FAR FAR FAR exceed what was paid.

On a personal note, i think what they are doing is GREAT, by offering this instruction at no charge, they are putting more people who want to legally carry and protect themselves and their loved ones on the street (i have been talking about getting my CCW for years, and The Gun Store's offer made my finally "pull the trigger"!  =)

I agree Gabriel.  You can't beat the value, especially if you're already competent with firearms.

Amen. It's a crime that we need a permit in the first place.

Something seriously wrong when the People have to get permission from the Government that is supposed to work for us to do something that is protected by the Constitution of the United States of America!

Sorry, Social Studies teacher. Governments violating our Rights and unequal protection under the law piss me off to no end.
