So I know when I was looking for info on CCW classes in Reno I got a lot of suggestions but found hardly any reviews... here goes my 2 cents:

This was a great class and my first CCW experience.  The instructor is a Reno P.D. officer with a broad range of experiences from investigator to motorcop duties.  I found this very important as he was able to not only speak from experience but also present issues and answer questions from the police perspective.  He gave the class a thorough presentation of the mandatory information as you would expect but kept things interesting by involving all class members in active discussion and answering even the silliest of my noob questions.  By the end of the classroom section I felt very comfortable with not only the letter of the law but also with how the police might handle a self defense shooting situation.  By the time we received the written test everyone felt very comfortable with the information and the lowest score was only minus 3 questions (well above the necessary minimum)  In addition to the basic legal info the instructor demonstrated and helped all class members through the loading and unloading processes for both revolvers and semi-autos, I even learned a new and much more efficient process for the revolver.   At the end of the morning classroom section the instructor walked us through the shooting qualification process and explained his range commands and expectations.

Class resumed after a break for lunch at the derby dam exit off of I-80 (the day's shooting location, another one in the carson valley is sometimes used).  My only complaint on the class was that a more formal range was not used; though the provided facility was perfectly acceptable.  At the range students were again briefed on the qualification process and range commands.  Safety was presented as key and even with a few very inexperienced classmates I never felt unsafe as the instructor and an assistant kept close watch over all of the class members.  In addition to simply running through the qualifying process the instructor offered personal shooting form guidance and demonstrations to all participants.  As per the instructors suggestion, "never miss an opportunity to practice" I was encouraged to and participated in all of the shooting line-ups including several after all of my classmates had left.  By the end of the day I ,as did all of my classmates, even the inexperienced ones, had qualified for the shooting portion of the Nevada CCW license.  Along with my signed paperwork I walked away feeling confident about my decision to get a CCW and having learned several things I know will make me a better shooter.

Class overview:

Cost: $75  (Nevada and Utah certifications)
Time: 7:00am - 5:00pm (including my additional range time +-1 hour)
Location: USFA + range location (Carson Valley or Derby Dam)
Personal review: 5 out of 5 stars!

Im sure I've missed something here since so please feel free to post or PM me if you have any questions!

Same experience for me a whle back (march I think?).

We used the Carson Range....even though Carson is more formal, we didnt use the formal part.  We were down, away from the public........probably to be less distracted.

So you didnt miss anything by going to Derby Dam exit..........much closer too !

Oh, and Derby is where they (USFA) have the Club day !!!

Thanks for the info DB+G.  I guess I am a little spoiled with the fancy new range they just built here in Winnemucca...  As I said I very much enjoyed the class and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a CCW course.
Got anymore info on the club day???
