Last night on the way home from Lake Havasu, Metro was patrolling US 95, just outside of Searchlight.  Why would they be that far away when they are Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department??  Wouldn't that be a little out of there jurisdiction?

I see at least one down that way everytime I'm there.  Is Searchlight Clark County?  I believe it is, maybe they patrol down there because we dont have a Sherrifs Dept?

This was my understanding. Metro is essentially also Clark County Sherriff. That's why he is Sherriff Gillespie, not Chief Gillespie. Therefore, Metro jurisdiction is technically all of Clark County (of course they will only do your sign-off if you are a Las Vegas resident, cute.)

Years ago (1970sIIRC) Las Vegas police and the Clark County Sheriff's Dept.were merged into Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Dept. This was done under a provision in the Nevada Revised Statutes IIRC.Metro has jurisdiction in the city of Las Vegas and unincorporated Clark County.

If I'm not mistaken Nevada LE don't have any jurisdictional limitations, other than courtesy to one another.  School police might be the exception.

I do know they patrol Laughlin, and Searchlight is on the way.

If you didn't know, Searchlight is well renown for giving speeding tickets out like CA gives food stamps.

Well, one of the guys i race RC cars with got a ticket.  70 in a 65.  No he has to go to court in searchlight.  Wonder if Craig P kenny takes care of those.

Thanks for the Info.  I guess it makes sense that Metro would patrol such a big area.

Yep guys, all of Clark County since 1973. Including all the highways, North Town and Hendertucky.

Small towns need police, so the county agency handles that area.

Searchlight is small and maybe Harry can donate some of his funds so they have their own police dept.

70/65 was the cite. How fast was he going? Odds are at least 85 to get stopped.

LVMPD is a hybrid department that serves as the county Sheriff's office (which is why they have a Sheriff instead of a police and wear tan uniforms) and the Las Vegas PD. The main reason is due to the fact that Las Vegas itself isn't really that big and most of the population of what is commonly referred to as the Las Vegas valley actually lives in unincorporated Clark County. LVMPD handles the valley as well as Laughlin, Sandy Valley, Searchlight, Mt. Charleston, Indian Springs, Jean, Primm and Overton along with all the open area between. The only places they don't handle in Clark County is Mesquite, Boulder City, NLV, and Henderson, because they all have their own police departments.

83  At 10pm, with hardly a car in sight.

Then he should be pleased since it will not be points on his license and raise his ins. If it would have been an NHP officer I doubt he would have gotten any break at all.

If it would have been me, i probably would have been written up for having 1 tail light brighter then the other, of one of my license plate lights being out.  That is my luck.  First ticket i was clocked at 38 in a 35.

Even those departments need mutual aid from Metro (i.e. Air Support, Search and Rescue,ARMOR,crime lab.)

I'm aware. One of the things I like about this county is even though there is some ribbing, when it comes down to it, Metro is willing to help the smaller agencies just as smaller agencies are willing to help Metro. Hell, I've seen UNLVPD be 2nd to assist a nora unit on an occupied 411a.
