I've heard the commercials and checked out their website, it sounds interesting.  Anyone work in sheet metal?

Have done a little in the plumbing trade and work with them daily. Its a loud trade with all the hammering and cutting of the sheetmetal ALL DAY LONG. Makes them not the most popular guys on the job . They make a very good wage

Yep, it's not a bad gig. I just got into the program and the facility is top notch. Retirement is what drew me to them. Also, one of the highest pay scales in the building trades. There's a lot more to sheet metal than banging duct all day. Fortunately, I got into the specialty side so it's not LOUD everywhere. Feel free to ask me any questions.

I am a General Foreman in Local 88. Sheet metal is a very rewarding career! There are so many different positions in the trade other than beating duct together. Local 88s training center is one of the best in the country and there is alot os opportunity if you are willing to learn. Go down to the union hall and put in an app. you have nothing to loose and do not get discouriged by the hiring process. Good Luck!

Tin Knockers are one of the few trades us "Sparkies" get along well with.
At least that is my experience on the job sites I've been on.

I'll be filling out an app next Tuesday for the apprenticeship program as well. If you see a silver Audi with a BFL, say what's up.

Yeah I'm gonna head down there.  I can make through one more holiday season in retail, and I think that's about it.

What's the math requirement? I saw that they administer a basic math test at a later date. If it's anything like the basic math test I took this past Tuesday for another job I applied for, it's a piece of cake. If you need to brush up I have a book you can borrow and of course I would always be willing to help you out. You should come down on Tuesday. I will be filling out my app between 8:30-11:30.

I checked into this months ago and you needed trig, and calc if I remember correctly. I've never taken either one.

Just checked the website, no trig or calc but geometry, and a few other things.

Holy crap. I don't even know what a Quadratic Equation or Pythagorean Theorem is. Looks like I've got some studying to do!

ETA: I looked up Pythagorean Theorem and it's pretty basic. I also looked up Quadratic Equations and that looks pretty difficult. Being that I never made it past Algebra 1 I think the Quadratic Equations are way out of my league. That said I am still going to fill out the app. I can learn this stuff.

Dont sweat the math. Study the guides they give you and be possitive in your interview. I suck with math too but when you get in you will be going to classes.

Look People you are going in as an Apprentice Tin Knocker not Rocket Scientists. They will teach you the Math you need to know. Thats the reason why they have an Apprenticeship is to teach you. Otherwise you would be a Journeyman.

I was looking at some Tin Knockers the otherday and told my partner how all the other Trades look so young anymore. It seems like us IronWorkers are just old guys.

+1, go to the math review, usually a month or so before your actual test date. Study that and a standard tape measure, you'll be gtg.

I was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers International Association Local #399 for over 27 years.  I enjoyed running an Amada CNC turret punch machine for 11 years and I was a Metal Spinner for 16 years before that.  I, however, will never join another union.  I saw first hand how the unions will keep the Company from getting rid of the F*$koffs, and how they would screw over those who would actually work.

thanks for the encouragement I think I will look into it then. I've been working in the food & beverage industry for 20 years and it's all I know. I'm getting real tired of it and would like to learn a trade.

A good study guide to use is the one for the ASVAB test used in the military.
I  took for a few apprentice tests for a few trades and that 's what they recommended.
Of course were going back twenty years, but i know the Operating Engineers still use something close.

Damn, thats rough. It's looking pretty bad up here too right now. No big jobs at all.  Kinda depressing. I just hired back on after 5 months of being laid off. But nobody else has been hired anywhere in town since me, and that was almost a month ago.

I did electrical construction for 5 years and then I looked around.  I did not see any older electricians, I knew a few but damn few.  Construction is cyclical, the money is fairly good but not that good.   When it dies it dies right now.  No limping, no real warning.  And it takes a long time to really come back.    That's why I went back to school.

As a nurse I don't lack for work at any time.
